Won't save automactically

Post by Mike Warren »

Can't get auto save to work in Studio 10. Set to save every 10 minutes under "preferences". Yet whenever my computer crashes I still lose everything I did for last 3 hours. When I save manually it saves OK. But is it really necessary to do this manually as I work on my project. I'm obviously doing something wrong. Any idea what that is? Thanks! Mike

Usually, after a crash and upon restart of VS it will ask if you want to recover the project. Do you get that?

Will not automatically save.

Yes, in Studio 10, I do get a choice to recover my project after a crash. But when I recover project this way and then later save my work I am pressed to give it a new name. Otherwise it won't save. After changing its name to save it, I find I lost my original work... it is no longer in list under "file", in either it's new or old name. Nor can I find it in computer. So I know I'm doing something wrong. This "save" thing has always been very confusing for me. I just wish this software would automatically save every 10 or so minutes, as it says it will. Why it won't do this I don't understand. I think... thats my real question. Thanks for any help you can give. Mike

I have a habit of saving the project file under different names after every important stage has been reached. This way of the worst happens I can rewind to an earlier point in time.

This is also useful if I find I am unhappy with the part I am currently working on and again I can rewind to the last completed stage.

Take for example a wedding video (I am not suggesting this is how to do a wedding video - just using an example here)

1. Put Wedding video on timeline.
2. Chop it up into stages
  • Arrive at church
  • leave church
  • Arrive at reception
  • pre-dinner speeches
  • dinner
  • After dinner Speeches
  • Disco
  • bride and groom leave for honeymoon
3. Save initial project. (e.g. Wedding01)
4. Do the [Arrive at church] section - chop a bit away here, chop a bit away there, add a title, bit of background music etc.
5. Save Project under new name (e.g. Wedding 02)
6. Do the [leave Church] section- chop a bit away here, chop a bit away there, add a title, bit of background music etc.
7. Save Project under new name (e.g. Wedding 03)

And so on.....

I seem to recall, when AutoSave was first introduced, that it was concluded that it worked, but that it did not autosave the project file (.vsp) but to some other file especially designated for the purpose. Unfortunately, I don't recall much more, especially where that file might be stored or what its extension might be.

Does anyone else recall?

(I confess I did not record it since I am in the habit of manually saving my project after just about every step in the editing process... That way I don't have to worry about the AutoSave feature.)

That's right. When you "recover" a project it is not named. You have to go to File > Save As. Not sure what happens to the original project. :?
