I am new to WinDVD and this is my first post so please bear with me.
I just purchased a retail version of WinDVD 8 Platinum online and am attempting to install it on Windows XP Home addition with the supplied disk. First of all it is giving me fits trying to install. All I get is an error that reads "1628: Failed to complete installation." I tried a clean install following given instructions with no success.
However, the downloaded trial version installed just fine but my days with that are fast running out. I have the serial number from the retail disk but the registration process requires a license key and last four digits from my credit card. Of course I did not purchase it from interVideo directly so I don't have any email with this info to input into the required spaces. So how do I use my serial number to get this thing registered?

The registration of Intervideo and Ulead products has been migrated to Corel and so you might be able to register it there with just the serial number.

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunatly they stated that it was not possible for me to unlock a downloaded version with my retail serial number. I'm still stuck with a nice looking interVideo CD that doesn't work!
I am running out of things to try to install this program. I have followed all the advice about installing InstallShield's latest installer package on my XP and cleaning the temp file, ending processes etc. etc. and I get nowhere. I even tried copying the installation files onto the hard drive and I did notice that it would not copy the windvd.msi file. Whats with that? I had to copy it off the disk with a Mac and then back onto the PC but it still would not run. Is it possible that my windvd.msi file is corrupt? Any way of getting just that file from somewhere to try?

Found the answer to my problem. It was nothing to do with my computer system at all. The problem was the WinDVD software. InterVideo had released retail disks that were damaged. I was fortunate that the retailer that I purchased them also was made aware of this issue and refunded my money. That is a relief knowing now that the problem was not on my end at all.
So if your retail version WinDVD won't install on Windows XP then it may be because your disk was screwed right from InterVideo and all you can do is push for a refund.
