Dropped frames during capture in VS10
I've only been at this a couple of months. I have VS10 and have set my preferences per the tutorial by Videoman. Today during capture, I was experiencing dropped frames. My working folder was in "My Videos". I did a defrag, disk cleanup and rebooted. I moved my working folder to D:/ drive which uses FAT32 filing system whereas my C:/ drive is NTFS. After about ten minutes of capture I started getting dropped frames again. I stopped the capture and moved my working folder to G:/ drive which is NTFS. I did a 28 minute capture without any dropped frames, but during the capture the picture on the screen was jumpy. On playback after the capture it is okay. I am thinking about moving my working folder back someplace in C:/ drive. I think my original problem there was it needed a defrag badly. Any suggestions?

You need to give us a bit more information about how you are capturing your video. What is the source e.g. Mini DV Camcorder, DVD Camcorder, TV card etc.
Method of transfer e.g. IEEE1394 (Firewire) cable, USB cable, RCA leads etc. Bit Rates, format e.g. DV(avi) MPEG2 etc.
Basically you need to follow:

The fact that your capture looked "jumpy" on the preview screen is immaterial if the actual captured footage is fine. The preview is just a low quality, um, preview.

There are all sorts of reasons for a poor preview. I got it on one of my computers because I had placed the Firewire card too far away from the CPU in the PCI slot chain... Jerky (i.e. dropped frames) preview, though playback was perfect. I learned to live with it. After all, it was the captured video playback which was important.
Defragging and changing the working folder may work. But if your captures are fine, why worry???
