VideoStudio 11 Trial Problem

Post by accapella4 »

I currently have VideoStudio 7 and a new camcorder that uses DVD's. The old version 7 doesnt recognize my camcorder (Canon DVD Camcorder DC230) so I'm looking to upgrade. Also the old version 7 doesnt recognize TS video files I either drag from the DVD or using the USB cable dragging to my desktop. I sure hope the new version 11 does.

So I downloaded the free trial and fired her up and used the Import DVD files and it went *poof*!!! Windows shut down the entire program and wanted me to send a report. Bah! so I tried it again. It did the same thing. so I re-booted my computer and I get a Security Error message saying the software is no longer valid or some such. I thought it was a 30 day trial not a 30 min trial. I really wanna try it before I buy it, as there are alot of other software programs claiming to do much the same as VideoStudio 11 does and for a wee bit less. But I am already used to using my much beloved VideoStudio 7 and would like to continue, IF:
1) It will recognize my new camcorder right?
2) It will recognize and allow me to edit TS files right?
3) I can get the free trial to work. When I click on the Icon on my desktop it does nothing. Zip. Nada.

So thanks in advance to any of you that can help me with my 3 answers.

1) It will recognize my new camcorder right?

Not necessarily. "Most" of the DVD cams on the market are recognised by Windows as an external USB Mass Storage device. As such the software cannot access the contents of the disc in the cam. Some of the cam manufacturers include software with the cam that addresses this situation. VS will most likely not be one of them unless it was included with the cam. Also, due to the nature of DVDs it is generally necessary to finalise the disc in the cam anyway. Most people handle this by finalising the disc, then taking it our of the cam and putting it in the DVD tray of the computer then importing from there. In VS you would use the "Import from DVD/VR" function to achieve this.

2) It will recognize and allow me to edit TS files right?

There are no "TS Files." The structure of the DVD will have a VIDEO_TS folder and an AUDIO_TS folder. The audio one usually has nothing in it. The VIDEO_TS folder contains the actual footage you shot in the guise of files that have the VOB extension. Using the "Import from DVD/VR" function will read through the "wrapper" that is the VOB extension and extract the MPEGs for editing.

3) I can get the free trial to work. When I click on the Icon on my desktop it does nothing. Zip. Nada.

Sounds very much like that by trying to access the cam directly using VS, Windows had some sort of brain fade of its own and has corrupted the installation. You could try to uninstall the trial then re-install. I would look in the tutorials section of this forum for the instructions on how to do a "clean" uninstall as there is a possibility that Windows has messed with some part of the trial and the trial now "thinks" it is greater than 30 days old.

I think there might be a basic misconception here. A mini DVD camera does not have to be recognised by Video Studio. The idea is that you take the mini DVD out of the camera (it may have to first be finalised within the camera -- check your camera manual for that), and put into your computer's DVD drive. Then you use Insert DVD/DVD-VR and point it at the disc (not the camera).

I thought VS 7 also had Insert DVD/DVD-VR....

Your second question is about 'TS files'. I take it you mean files within the Video_TS folder. Yes, you will be able to edit the video files (the ones with the .vob extension) in that folder, using the Insert DVD/DVD-VR command first to import them. After selecting that, you will be shown a tree structure of the disk. You select what you want to import by putting a tick in the small box to the left of each video. Then select 'Import'. VS will first 'parse' them and ask if they should be converted to editable format. After saying OK, they are duly imported to do with as you wish.

VS10 actually allowed the insertion into the timeline of .vob files themselves directly, but this has been dropped, for some reason, from VS11 -- a pity in the view of a lot of us.

Another way of getting .vob files into VS is to copy them to hard disk, then simply change the extension from .vob to .mpg.

Can't help with the trial version question. I have never used a trial version of any Ulead product.

Hi accapella4,
Damn! The only thing I can think of is this. Do the clean uninstall again (groan!)then restart the computer in selective start up mode. Go to START/RUN/ and type msconfig. Choose the GENERAL tab and then SELECTIVE STARTUP. Then UNCHECK - LOAD STARTUP ITEMS.

Reboot in that mode but don't forget to go back and change it when all this is finished.
Reinstall, reset the startup items then reboot.

Another alternative would be to roll windows back to a time ealrier than the original crash and see what happens.
I have to admit this one is getting beyond my knowledge level.
