VCD to DVD Conversion
Is there any direction that I can convert video from VCD to DVD? Some of the DVD players are not supporting the VCD's.
Appreciate your suggestions and thanks in advance.

I believe that you should be able to import VCD movies into Videostudio and then render them as DVD. You may loose a little resolution which is to be expected when re-rendering.
I rendered my first digital movies to SVCD (slightly higher resolution than VCD) in 2000 as DVD burneres weren't readily available and intend to convert these to DVD using the above method.

The trickiest part is extracting th mpg from the VCD (usually the *.DAT file). Some folks simply rename the *.DAT file to *.MPG -- which can work in some cases, but occasionally it might be the source of some issues such as a/v sync (do a test run with one of your VCD's).
The good news is that you should not need any re-encoding of a standard VCD mpg video (the audio will need to be re-encoded to 48khz, and perhaps AC3).

George

VCD to DVD format ANSWER!
The BEST way to turn a VCD into a DVD is to take your Video camera and hook it up to either the Computer or the "output" of your home system that will play the VCD, and to the "input" of your Video camera, and record. THIS WORKS GREAT - I KNOW IT WORKS.
Requirements; That you have an input on your Camera. That the Capturing software (in this case Ulead) has a video output format to choose from. I know Pinnacle has it, but not sure Ulead has this option.
After capturing the VCD on your camera's tape, download the content in the Ulead program, as you would any other content from your camera to the program and then burn it onto a DVD. Whala! You now have a DVD of the VCD.
The only other way, would be an actual Computer DVD copy program that will copy and convert a VCD to a DVD format and burn it as a DVD. I have not needed this software, so I have not looked for this. I am sure it exhists!

That is certainly one approach that will work -- whether it is the BEST way would depend on a few things...digitalpics4u wrote:The BEST way to turn a VCD into a DVD is to take your Video camera and hook it up to either the Computer or the "output" of your home system that will play the VCD, and to the "input" of your Video camera, and record. Suppose I have 10 VCD's of 80-minutes each. That's 13+ hours just to capture the video to your camcorder tape (playback is "realtime" -- 80-minutes equals 80-minute playback/capture).
If you now have to take it from camcorder to computer, then that is another 13+ hours. You can save this time if you have a camcorder with passthrough.
Then you *might* have to convert the captured video to DVD-Compliant video (depending on the format you captured). A realtime conversion would be another 13+ hours. So far we are up to ~40 hours
Well, you could play the VCD into a DVD-Recorder unit for quicker conversions (again, realtime playback/recording).
However, if you take the approach of importing the VCD mpeg streams, and author using the mpeg streams, your conversion time from VCD-to-DVD can be much faster (without subjecting the video to multiple conversions).
Well, there's certainly many different ways to approach this -- if something works for you, then that's all that matters...

GeorgeW How do you Make a VCD into a stream?
does this take special software? I have been just trying to "copy" a VCD with no luck on my Roxio software. Does any Ulead video program stream a VCD into the program for further rendering to ultimately turn it into a DVD?

VCD and VCR into a Ulead Program?
I would LOVE to enter a VCD straight into a Video rendering program. I'd also love to play a VCR tape into the program. Can I do either of these?? Right into a Ulead program to do further rendering?
Thanks ahead of time !

Did you try the approach I suggested earlier in this thread, and it did not work? Just want to rule that out if you already tried it...digitalpics4u wrote:I would LOVE to enter a VCD straight into a Video rendering program. I'd also love to play a VCR tape into the program. Sure, this is possible if you have video capture hardware. (A digital camcorder, a capture card, or a capture device.)I'd also love to play a VCR tape into the program.
If you've never done analog video capture before, there is some good information at videohelp.com.
WARNING - I've never done anything with VCD, so try the other suggestions before you try anything I suggest!
I am aware of a program called SVCD 2 MPG (~ $40 USD) which they claim will convert almost anything to DVD. Or, you could try converting the DAT files to MPEG-2 with SUPER, which is a FREE "universal conversion", program. You can look at some fo the Video Studio Project Settings to find the settings (resolution, framerate, bitrate, etc) for a DVD compatible MPEG-2 file.

Try http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/con ... dtodvd.htm which explains conversion of VCD to DVD.
Also look at http://forum.videohelp.com/topic141726.html#vcd
Also have a look at TMPGenc (software).

I have managed to convert the VCD to DVD using Visual Studio v8. The following is the procedure that I have followed.
From, Visual Studio Editor, go to share mode.
- choose create disc option.
- Add video (pick the video file from VCD... e.g. AVSEQ01.DAT located in mpegv directory)
Burn the disk.
I was able to convert the VCD to DVD in 4 hrs of time. If possible, copy the VCD folders to local disk, this improves the processing time.
