It is the first time I use DVD+RW with my DVDcam and I have the following problem. As a test before going on a trip, I recorded a few minutes of video using the xtra setting, which is VBR 10mbps (peak). My camera is an Hitachi DZGX-5020A. NTSC 16:9 720x480.
I have a total of 4 scenes on my DVD. My DVDcam create a chapter for each. I did the finalization to get the menu. I can playback the DVD properly on HP DVDplay and Windows Media Player as well as Media Center. With VS11+ I tried to import the DVD using the "Import from DVD/DVD-VR" available from the capture tab. After parsing, I see 1 title and 4 chapters.
When I select the Label, I have this in the info tab.
Label: DVD_CAMERA
Format: DVD+VR
TV system: NTSC 30 fps
When I select the Title, I have this in the info tab.
Title 2
Number of chapters: 4
Number of angles: 1
Number of audio streams: 1
Number of subtitle streams: 1
TV system: 525/60 NTSC
Attribute: 24 Bits, 720 x 480, 4:3
Frame rate: 29.970 Frames/sec
Data rate: Variable bit rate (MAX 8800 kbps)
Total duration: 00:01:44.04
When I select the first chapter, I have this in the info tab.
Chapter 0 of title 2
Start time: 00:00:00.00
Total duration 00:00:53.17
Selecting chapter 0 and clicking Import, I get a file in the library manager which has the following properties.
File format: NTSC DVD
File size: 105 984 KB
Duration: 12.513 seconds
Video type: MPEG-2 Video, UFF
Total frames: 375
Attributes: 24 bits, 720 x 480x 16:9
Frame rate: 29.970 f/s
Data rate: VBR (Max. 8800 kbps)
Audio type: Dolby Digital Audio
Total samples: 600 601 Samples
Attributes: 48000 Hz
Layer: None
Bit rate: 192 kbps
As you can see, many things are wrong.
1- The title info shows 4:3 but I shot in 16:9, once imported, 16:9 is displayed.
2- The chapter info shows a duration of 53.17 but once imported, I have only 12.513 (375 frames is effectively 12.513 and 600 601 samples of audio is also 12.513)
3- Strangely, 105 984 KB is exactly the size of the VOB file on the DVD.
If I drag the clip in the timeline, it will occupy a bit more than 12 seconds. If I play in clip mode, the cursors of both the timeline and the preview window will move on while the video plays until the end of the timeline and the preview window and the cursors will stop there but the video will continue playing for about 30 seconds showing the complete scene.
If I do the same in project mode, the video stop playing back when the cursors reach the end but then I see the last frame of chapter 3 in the preview window !
What is going on ?
Importing using VS10+ leads to the same problem, although the clip duration is 12.546 instead of 12.513.
Using VS10+ to insert the VOB directly in the timeline, I see the clip being 1:44.02 (2 frames less than the VS11+ info was saying about title 2). When I playback, the cursors stops at 12 and something secs but the preview still plays until I get a "memory cannot be read" error and VS10+ shuts down.
I am afraid that my DVDcam is not handling DVD+RW properly but any ideas would help.
