Welcome to the forums,
This is a common error, however can be triggered for several different reasons.
Check your connections. If you're using Firewire, make sure your cable is seated in both your PC and camcorder. Most of the times with this error, your PC does not recognize that the camcorder is connected.
I'm no expert, or for that matter have any experience with HD camcorders. However if you will search on the forums for HDV, or AVCHD, and on the 2nd line of the search, insert the author name of etech6355, you should locate several entries. One may be applicable to you.
What make / model of Sony is your HDV? Does it record to HDD, DVD or tape? How are you trying to get it into your PC for editing?
