What are the easy ways of converting video from tape to DVD?
What is the easiest way of converting the Video from Tape to DVD without using the DV-to-DVD wizard?
I don't want to edit the video. What I require is to edit the tittle and convert the entire video from Tape to DVD using VS11?
Appreciate, if you can generously specify me simple steps to produce the DVD's?
Thanks

As you didn't specify if the tape is analog or digital, what format your capturing (DV, MPEG2), and if you mean by editing the title, just adding a title?
This is a real short simple tutorial.
1. Open VS, go to the Capture Step.
2. Capture your video to your computer.
3. Once Capture is done, the Capture step should close, and now your in the Editor. Thumbnails to your video will be either in the timeline or Library or both.
4. With your video in the timeline, click on the Title Step. BTW, the Steps are listed across the top of the interface. Add your title, and any animation.
5. Go to the Share Step, select Share>Create Video File>DVD (NTSC or PAL). Choose a name for your video file. This will produce a DVD compliant MPEG-2.
6. Once this is complete, click File>New Project. This is just to clear the timeline of your video. You can also just highlight the video and delete it.
7. Go to Share>Create Disk. Do not insert anything into the timeline before going to Share>Create Disk.
8. Now you're in the Burn Module. Insert your DVD Compliant MPEG-2, that your created in Step#5.
9. Build your menus, add chapters etc..
10 Preview it for errors or possible changes. If none..
11. You should now be in the burn stage, where you can burn to disk, Create DVD Folders or a Disk Image file. Choose one (you can actually choose all, however if you want to make sure everything turns out, then uncheck Burn to Disk, and check Create DVD Folders. You can then test this using a software DVD player. If it turns out alright, then you can burn the folders to disk.
Hope that helps..

What method of caputre
I have VS 10. What is the capture choices one should make to capture analog composite video? Upper feild or lower feild? Should one choose DVD format if that is what the output will be? Thoughts on the audio settigns and video bit rate (variable?)
There used to be a tutorial on this forum but I can not seem to find it. Thanks

Hi mghia
Use upper field for analogue capture.
Choose Dvd format, this provides a dvd compatible template.
Select the 'options cogwheel' then video property settings to edit.
Property settings including Audio may depend on your location, Ntsc or Pal, but Digital Dolby would be a safe option.
So where are you in this world????
There are tutorials http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewforum.php?f=27

Thanks.
I am in the US. Thought to set it to MPEG audio or Dolby 2.0 since this was a mono signal.
However in both VS 9 and 10 I can not seem to get the VIVO to work with my EVGA card 7800 GT (uses NVDIA WDM driver and this software. I have the lastest WDM driver and even re installed it but VS says it sees the driver but yet will not find the video signal from the VCR.
I mention this in case this is just another issue with VS or if there is an easy switch.
I do get the audio bars to start to move but no sound then after a few seconds in the capture mode it says it did not get a signal.
Thoughts?
Thanks

Hi My thoughts.
I would use these for my project properties:-
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: 4000 kbps (constant bit rate is just my preference, use variable if you wish)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo ( I do not think Mpeg audio is a standard for NTSC video)
From the capture tab-select Capture Video
Select Options
Select Video and Audio Capture property settings
Select ¡¥Advanced¡¦
Select Template- Project Template Value
This should set the capture using the project properties
Select OK
In the next window select Source tab
Select Video Composite as Input Source.
Select Line-In as the audio input source.
Do you see video.

Tape to DVD
Fast, Simple and Good:
1. copy tape to a good DVD recorder JVC DR 100, etc..
The DVD recorder improves the quality of the recording. I had some with snow and the recorder reduced it markedly. Use a stabilizer if Macrovision is present.
2. Rip to computer using a good ripper (DVDFAB.)
3. Convert the VOB files to mpg using TDA(TempGenc DVD Author).
4. Edit with Video Redo, as needed.
5. Convert the edited mpg to a new set of VOB's using TDA
6. Burn with TDA to a DVD
With good equipment from step 2. to the finished product is about 1.5 hours, for a full length movie.

Yes I do now but not from the instructions. Thanks anyway.trevor andrew wrote:Hi My thoughts.

I reloaded the NVIDA driver and that fixed that problem
I guess VS is just too slow as a renderer since I matched all my settings, used the SHARE menu tip and it 45 mintues still took 1.5 hours with NO TITLES AND NO CHAPTERS OR MENUS.
Is that common? I got that dreaded "This will take a while" message. I had six clips since I was cutting out the commericals on taped and did not see a way to just PAUSE the capture.
It made a new clip each time
But it is in MPEG format and all I I did was put them in order on the time line. So if already an MPEG why would it take so long to render?
OH and yes I did check some box in the preferences to not re render MPEG compliant files or something like that.
Maybe the CODEC in VS10 is just slow no matter what?

1. Just because it is in MPEG format does not mean it is in a DVD compliant MPEG format.
2. Even a DVD compliant MPEG format would have to be re-rendered if the combined size of the Video Files and the overhead required for the DVD Menus exceeds the total amount of space available on a disc - in other words 'reduced to fit.'
If your MPEG files are compliant and if the combined size of the videos and the Menus do fit, then it still takes time to actually create those DVD menu pages. The amount of time taken will vary according to the type of Menu you are creating which can be
Text only
Static Thumbnails
Motion thumbnails
Smartscene.
The time taken can be further increased if you have included other moving parts such as a motion background or spinning logos.

Um... Steve, he actually said:
As for the time it took, I would not say that 2x real time was all that long. In fact, it was probably more like 1.5 times real time, since it could take up to 10 or 15 minutes to multiplex your audio and video (once it had rendered), and then another 10 or 15 minutes depending on the burning speed you used, to actually burn the DVD.
If you look at my system button below, you will see my computer set-up. I find that a one hour (full single layer) DVD project will take about 1.25 to 1.5 hours to render, and then another 30 to 40 minutes to convert a menu, multiplex and burn at 4x. In other words, around the same time as you.
That being said, I agree that we would need to know the exact properties of the mpeg-2 because, as Steve has already said, not all mpeg-2s are necessarily DVD compliant. Some programs, indeed some cameras, for instance, produce mpeg-2s with a frame size of 640 x 480, which is most definitely not DVD compliant.45 mintues still took 1.5 hours with NO TITLES AND NO CHAPTERS OR MENUS

Ken, Yes I noticed that but mindful that others read these posts for similar 'problems' thought it better to include the fact that time must also be allowed for the creation of menus (when you include them.)Ken Berry wrote:Um... This posters problem prima facia relates to items 1 & 2 in my reply.
Thank you though for clarifying the ambiguity.

Hi mghia
Glad to hear you were successful in capturing your video.
OK
When you finally hit the Burn button, VS 10 will give the message ¡¥This action will take some time to render.¡¦
( VS 9 will not give this warning if your settings are correct)
Hit OK
The blue progress bar should indicate ¡¥Convert Menu¡¦ this is normal.
The time to render varies as Steve has said.
If the Progress bar shows ¡¥Convert Titles¡¦ Then you are rendering the main video files. This is not what you want and will take some time.
Rendering the video files in the burner module is not recommended.
If this has occurred then your properties are wrong (somewhere) or you have gone Share Create Disc with files/clips in the timeline. (rendering a Project)
We need to know the project properties and the captured video files.
Start a NEW project
File ¡V Preferences¡Xtick ¡¥Show messages when¡K
Insert a video file/clip to the timeline
You should see a info window, (do you want to change¡K..)
Select Details
Use your mouse to select and copy (Ctrl+C) the info in the Video Properties section.
Paste to this forum. (Ctr+ V)

I think I have a similar problem (sorry... its not a problem as such, its blatant lack of knowledge).
I have created a 5.7GB file by capturing video and wish to create DVD folders from it without compression. Do I just "fool the system" into believing that I'm going to burn to a DL DVD or is there another way?
Also, when I look at the Burn Project settings, I am unsure about the Field Type settings because I have digitised my original tape.
And, I don't understand the "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" check box. Should it be checked or not?
Sorry to be such a PITA but this is one hell of a learning curve for a 64 year old total novice.
Cheers
Edit: I'm on 11+
