8gb movie - how do i split in two??

Post by nelly79 »

Hi,

Apologies but this is a newbie question and one that is hopfully easily answered.

I have VideoStudio 10 + and have just finished editing my first movie (an hour and a half of footage from over 12 hours of DV). I now want to record this onto DVD or preferably create an image in which to burn to multipe DVD's however when I have just checked the size it is over 8gb. Can I split a project with a central menu system for both or is compression the only answer to avoid me losing days of work.

A big thanks to anyone who can answer.

Is the 8GB already in DVD-compatible mpeg-2 format? (The size sounds a little large for a standard definition movie, even using the highest quality bitrate, if the movie is only 90 minutes long...) On the other hand, if it were still in DV format, then it would be around 20 GB...

If you still have the original project in DV format, I would be inclined to open it and produce another mpeg-2 from it using a lower bitrate -- for 90 minutes, with Dolby or mpeg layer two audio, I would use around 6000 kbps.

Otherwise, if you want to cut your 8 GB into two, then find a suitable spot and use the scissors icon to make the cut. Save your original project. Delete the second half, and give the first half a new project name: e.g. File01.vsp. Then use Clip > Save Trimmed Video, and a new icon of the first half will appear in the Library pane.

Then reopen the original project. It should already have the cut. This time delete the first half, and give the remaining part a new project name and use Clip > Save Trimmed Video again.

You can then process each separate half in the burning module as a separate project, with its own menu etc.

thanks for your help - much appreciated.

I have another problem in that I have edited down the movie however would like to add a menu system and chapters. I have just read the manual again and think I should have used the Movie Wizard first to add menus and then edited this movie - the thing is it has taken me weeks to get the final cut and I dont want to lose all this effort.

Is there a simple way of adding a template to an already edited movie??

You still haven't told us whether your edited video is in DV format still, or whether you have already converted it to DVD-compatible mpeg-2. For this you use Share > Create Video File > DVD.

Once you have your mpeg-2, save your project, then open a new one. Don't worry about a name for it -- the objective is just to clear the timeline.

Then you go to Share > Create Disc, insert your new mpeg-2 into the burning timeline. Also, make sure 'do not convert compliant mpeg files' is ticked in the middle of the three icons in the bottom left of the burning screen. You should not have to adjust any of the properties in the burn module.

You build your menu at this stage. You don't have to have built it with the Wizard beforehand. In fact, I have been using Video Studio since version 7 and have NEVER used a wizard with it.
