Can't capture from DVD to avi.

Post by Chants »

Hi!

I am thrilled to have found this board because I have been having a hard time capturing from dvd to avi.

I have a Windows XP, Pentium III Processor, 697 MHz and 512 MB of RAM and I am using VS7.

Whenever I try to make the type of format to capture, an AVI file, it jumps back to MPEG automatically. I am trying to capture from a DVD and convert it into an AVI file but it won't let me do this. What can I do?

I was successful in capturing to MPEG but the audio did not play in VS7...I did read several posts though and the audio worked in Windows Media Player and Real Player. Whenever I open those programs with those files though, it shuts down and says it encountered a problem. Not sure why...any answers to this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Since the video on your DVD will only be MPEG quality anyrate there is not point in trying to convert to .avi - if you then intend to burn a new DVD you will have to convert it back to MPEG yet again - why not just capture and edit as MPEG (which UVS will let you do - no problem) and avoid all those possible conversion problems.

If you really do want an .avi file for some reason then I would suggest capturing as MPEG and then using the "Share >> Create Video File" function to create the required .avi.

With regard to your audio problem it is almost certainly because the sound on your DVD is Dolby Digital and to resolve that you need to upgrade to Version 8 AND get the Dolby Digital plug-in from here :-

MPEGs and AVIs

Thanks for your reply.

I read that it was better to edit in AVI format...is that false?
If I decide to go that route and use an AVI format, the Share>>Create Video File is never highlighted. The only one I can click on is >>Create Disc. How do I get the others to highlight?

Is there a way of getting the format to stick to what I wanted instead of the software just deciding for me to make it an MPEG?

I look forward to your hearing from you!

Hi!

Please ignore my previous post. I realized that in order for the other options to be highlighted under the Create menu, I need to have that specifc clip in the timeline.

As for the audio problem, if I just download the patch will it work? Or do I definitely need to upgrade as well?

Thanks!!

Yes you need to upgrade to version 8 - the Dolby Digital patch will not work in version 7

and yes if you are capturing digital video by firewire it is much better to capture and edit as .avi - but as you only have mpeg on the DVD I do not think it is worth trying to convert.
