Capture Question

Post by robbie61 »

In Video Studio 11...how do I capture in different formats than the ones listed in the drop down menu?
I'm capturing video from an Edirol DV-7 editing deck. And I'd like to be able to not only capture it as .avi But also as .wmv in different quality modes. How do I do that?
My editing is already done (on the editing deck) So capturing it as .avi and then having to sit for a few hours watching it render to a .wmv really sucks.
I'm wondering if there is a way to put some of the profiles I created in the movie template manager, into that drop down selection.
Thanks! :D

I'm kinda surprised that you chose VS as your editor, given you're using an Edirol..

However not even knowing what OS you're running, VS11+ does not support capturing in WMV. Ulead (now Corel) changed the capture control plug-in from the DirectShow, to IVI (Intervideo) capture plug-in. It does not support capturing in WMV format. This is mostly due to Vista, and what it does/does not support. So I'd say the ultimate blame is credited to Micro$oft.

I'm not using VS as the editor...what I needed was something to quickly save files as .wmv's for use on the web. And to capture vidcaps, cut movies into smaller sections, etc. I've been using windows movie maker for a few years for those tasks...but over the last few months it has been glitching like crazy and getting more and more unstable. So I went ahead and purchased VS 11 hoping that it would solve the problem.
But man, it takes FOREVER to make a .wmv out of an .avi on VS 11! The quality has been good, but the process is ungodly slow for me. And now that you're telling me that it can't capture in .wmv I'm beginning to think that I haven't found the right program to replace moviemaker with for these mundane, but essential tasks for me. :( Thanks for your help.

Are you capturing pure/raw .avi or DV? Since raw avi yields such large files, your PC may be having trouble dealing with such large files.

If you're capturing/transferring DV, then there may be another solution. You might try capturing using a free little utility called WinDV. This captures DV only. Once you have it on your PC, if converting to WMV, is all you need to do with it, then try erightSoft Super.
