Converting VOB files to mpg

Post by exportman »

I downloaded a test version of DVD Movie Factory because one of the features is supposed to be an easy conversion from vob files to mpgs. Cab DVD Movie Factory do this in an easy step? Before paying for the full version could someone pls give me some instructions on how to do this. Thanks.

OK! No responses. So, how about converting VOB to avi? Can this software do either?

Import from DVD

You use the Import from DVD function (it has to be non-protected).

Make sure the .vob is in a VIDEO_TS folder.

When you go to the add/edit media page, there is an option to import DVD. You can also edit the DVD on the disk which I have not tried. The import DVD is annoying because is splits the files at the chapter points. The other option is to copy the VOB to the hard drive, rename it from VOB to MPG which can work. DMF does not import commercial DVDs with copy protection. THis will work for non-copy protected and home recorded DVDs.

I have in the past successfully imported vobs into movie factory, which as phd says, creates an mpeg but annoyingly splits it into chapters. Then I have found this folder of mpegs and joined these mpegs into one big mpeg using any freebie mpeg joiner program. Time spent for 4Gb of vob files using this technique is 10 minutes, which is a lot shorter than many programs designed just to convert vobs to mpegs.

Also, provided the VOB isn't from a CSS-protected DVD, you can in many cases simply rename the file to have a .MPG extension -- most programs will then be able to open the file.

You might want to check out Nero instead. It has a trial period as well.

Hi,

you might as well use Dvd Lab,
it creates a demuxed mpg from a numbered series of VOBs
