*HELP* Another Mini DV Firewire issue JVC GR-D250

Post by simc »

Greetings guys,

I have had a read of a large number of posts regarding Mini DV firewire connection issues, seems like a frequent thing.

I have come across the same thing with my JVC GR-D250.

The camera: 4pin firewire DV output. ( I have never used it prior to this). Appears to be no physical damage to the port.

The computer: Dell laptop, windos XP, 4 pin 1394 firewire port, device manager says its working fine.

The Cable: 4pin 1394 cable to 6pin, and then a 6 to 4 pin adapter plug, so that it plugs into the 4pin input on the laptop.

I have tested the cable with a multimeter, all pins are connect and correct.

When I plug the camera in (running off batt or mains supply) the PC does not detect the camera.

I do not have ay drivers or software specifically for the camera as it was not included when i bought it.... but are these required??? Should the PC detect it anyhow?

I have had no issues with transpering from a HD camera via usb, but my minidv just wont connect!!!

Help please

Firstly check your drivers:

Item 10 - Troubleshooting your computer

Any faulty items of hardware will have a yellow exclamtion mark :!: alongside them. If you do not have a driver problem then check to see if you are doing the following:

1. Camcorder turned OFF
2. Start VideoStudio
3. Goto Capture Tab.
4. Turn your camcorder ON and to PLAYBACK mode.
If the firewire connection is working you should get a message telling you that it has detected a new device attached to your system and inviting you to use it.

Just downloaded the latest trial version of ulead 11.

I did what you described above, and I have no driver issues relating to the firewire port.

I also ran Ulead and connected/turned on everything in the order you suggested, and it still did not work.

Error:
"Either no video capture driver is installed in this system or no device is connected"

#####!!!

Any other suggestions?

Possibly a faulty cable.
Do you have access to another computer that you can try the cable with.
Also try using Windows Movie Maker that is built into your operating system.

I will try it on another PC, probably over the weekend, or I will try and pick up another cable if I get a chance.

It is starting to sound like a cable issue as you mentioned as the camera and laptop are both pretty much still new. The 6 to 4 pin adapter might be the culprit.

Also, I have tried ulead 11, windows movie maker, and another two trial versions of DV capture software.... still no go.

Thankyou for your help so far, I will report back with an update.

It may be your adapter that is causing the problem. You should be able to pick up a 4pin - 4pin Firewire. Since your camera and laptop both use 4 pin.

IT WORKS!!!!

It was a cable issue.
The adapter i picked up from Jaycar Electronics CAT. NO. PA0910, did not work.

I swapped it for a 4pin to 4 pin CAT. NO. WC7640, and away she went!

Im very impressed with the quality and functions with my new toy.
Thanks for the help guys, you were a great help!!! :D :D :D
