Exif info are lost

Post by Czmax »

I have pictures (in JPEG) coming from a digital camera

I load them in Photoimpact 10 and the Exif info are available

I modify them and then I "save as" in JPEG format.

When I load again this modified picture, the exif infos have disappeared.

On the PC of a friend of mine this does not happen.

What I am doing wrong ?

Try this to see if it cures the missing EXIF issue.

1. Your photograph(s) are in c:\ThisDirectory
2. Copy/paste the photographs to C:\NewDirectory

You now have 2 copies of the photograph.

3. Open the photograph in C:\NewDirectory - make your alterations/enhancements and this time SAVE (Not Save AS)

(Your original photograph is safe in c:\This Directory.)
Does this method preserve your EXIF Information?

This happened to me in Version 12. Hope it is applicable to version 10. I was advised by ulead team to uncheck the color management box in the preference.

Exif gets removed

Post by jolo »

I have to add to this situation.

I have a Canon Digital camera, did some photos, then some editing in Photo impact 12.

I then went to print and I noticed that t he Exif settings were gone, as my print output colors were different than what was on my screen. I have a Canon printer as well, that supports Exif.

After saving the photo, I used different software (a Canon product) to print, and I saw the pictures come out somewhat duller than the screen image as well.

I saved the original and loaded that into some less ambitious software ("freeware/donationware), IfranView, did some cropping, then printed from there.
The photo printed exactly as it looked on the InfranView window, as it recognized the Exif settings in the photo.

I know that Photoimpact 12 is supposed to support Exif. I wonder if there are some editing features and/or saving features that remove the Exif settings ?

Thanks,

Jon

May I site my situation. I shot with Canon EOS 20D in Raw + jpeg. My printer is Canon IP4000. My laptop is HP Pavillion dv8000t. I edit my jpeg images with Photo Impact V12 with update No. 1 with Exif data preserved. The output print is acceptable to me. In order to get exact print as the monitor, I think you should calibrate both your PC and printer by Spyder2 Suite by ColorVision , which I don't have yet.

When you say Exif setting, do you mean Exif data. If it is exif data that is lost, goto File/Preferences/color Management and be sure to uncheck the color management botton. top option sRGB will be highlighted. Else exif data will be lost.

Exif

Post by jolo »

The revolutionary Exif allows the camera's settings to be carried with the picture file. In that way, graphics software that can read Exif as well as printers, can show the picture file as it was intended and look exactly the same on the screen/printer and all displays of it.
It is remarkable stuff.

This has nothing to do with my monitor. For example the freeware Infranview, Canon's own software, Easy Photo Print and Easy Photo Album and ZoomBrowser Ex will all look, display and print with the photo looking identical, all of the colors matching.

I remember the days pre-exif when I would learn that had to alter my photo to make the colors lighter or darker depending on the software/printer combo.

What I have done in the past is to make my edits in PhotoImpact, then if I was to print, use Canon's Easy Photo Print or Easy Photo Album, so that I I can print exactly as I see the colors, but print to precise dimensions and also allow for easy and exact borderless printing.

I am of t he opinion that there is some edit command or way of saving files that lose compromise the file stored exif information. I don't think it does it all of the time, but some of the time and I wish I knew what causes it.

I have quite a variety fo different types of graphics software, sometimes because some small software application might do one thing better than others. However, I try not to use the printing facility from PhotoImpact because I have found it to be not as exact, difficult with borderless printing and not as precise as others, particularly the Canon software.

The Canon software which I find great for printing, is a 1000 times more limiting than Photoimpact and I haven't found any graphics software to be anywhere near to PhotoImpact at the same price point or even near it.

I don't want to sound like I'm bitching/complaining. Photoimpact 12 is fantastic, but not perfect, as nothing is.

I also have some small special function software which I will use for audio and video as well.

Thanks,

Jon
