DVD MF6 causes DVD burner to be unrecognized
Hello:
I use DVD Moviefactory6 on my computer with few problems, but I recently bought a Gateway dual-core Athlon computer with 1 gig of ram.
Anyway, when I install DVD Moviefactory6 and then reboot, the computer no longer recognizes the CD and DVD burners at all!
I tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers, but without success...the device manager still shows them with yellow exclamation marks (!)
I'm very frustrated...my computer guy tried his hand and tells me the motherboard is incompatible with Ulead DVDMF6...Is that possible? What can I do?

Hi,
If you installed any burning softwares recently, please disable or uninstall it temporarily. Other burning softwares, especially ones with packet-writing capabilities that load into your system tray, can cause compatibility problems with the Ulead burning engine. Examples of such softwares are Nero InCD and Roxio EZCD Creator.
You might need to upgrade your firmware as a last resort. Please take note however, that this is a highly sensitive procedure. Check first the DVD burner manufacturer's website for any available firmware update for your burner model. If there's no specific update, there is an ASPI update generally available for all but contact the DVD burner's tech support for assistance doing that because it might backfire and cause more programs not to detect the drive.
Hope this would help.

I recently had a similar issue where no matter what, my two CD/DVD drives in one of my computers displayed that yellow exclamation mark.
This appeared just after installing a copy of Intervideo Home Theatre.
I tried all of the usual troubleshooting techniques as outlined in my post here:
Troubleshooting your computer
Eventually I had to re-install my Windows XP Operating system which cured the problem. Before going to such extreme measures I would try the steps outlined in my post above. (I was able to install Home Theatre after getting the drives recognised again)
I could probably have cured the issue eventually, but from experience there comes a point where you have to ask "Am I pursuing this because it is a challenge" where a re-installation will be quicker in the long run.
If you have to go the re-install route (After exhausting the suggestions in the above link) then firstly try an 'Upgrade Installation' as this will preserve all of your current software and settings. Only do a clean re-installation as a last resort.

Patch to make optical drives read again
Similar (same?) problem and uninstalling MF6 didn't help. Device manager reports "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)" for all optical drives.
If you search for this error code using Google, you'll find that DivX.com says it's a problem with the Roxio disk-burning DLL that they use in the DivX player. They have a file at
that made my optical drives read-able again.
Unfortunately, optical disk writing is still broken: the drive starts to write and then ejects the disk every time. Not just for MF6, for every program that can use the optical drives including QuickTime. Also, MF6 is completely incompatible with Roxio Easy CD 7.
Looks highly probable that I'll have to re-image the whole system and then drop back to MF4 since MF6 is un-usable.

It sounds like you have a few video editing applications installed on your computer. In many of these video apps or burning applications can be packet writing software or special drivers. These drivers conflict with each other. Most commonly the packet writing software, "Roxio Drag2Disk", Sonic DLA, Nero InCD, Ulead Data-Add2. To install MF6 you would need to un-install this conflicting driver. Not just for MF6, for every program that can use the optical drives including QuickTime. Fails with only MF6 installed
I never install packet-writing SW for exactly this reason. MF4 got along with EasyCD7 and QT just fine. Since DivX says their player (installed by MF6) installs the Roxio burning DLL and MF6 insist on having QT installed, it's hard to understand why MF6 would then stomp on both of them.It sounds like you have a few video editing applications installed on your computer. In many of these video apps or burning applications can be packet writing software or special drivers.
At any rate, uninstalling every app that can use the optical drives and re-installing only MF6 + the recommended patch file didn't fix the problem: I still can't write to either internal or external optical drives.

Edit registry to make DVD-R writable
After uninstalling MF6, these instructions from Corel Tech Support made my DVD-R writable so I could do one last incremental backup but killed iTunes/QT again. Re-installing a known-good version iTunes once again made both DVD-R unavailable in Device Manager.
In the end, the only thing that got EasyCD + iTunes + MF4 (I don't dare re-try MF6) working again was to re-imaging my whole system on to a bare disk.
Code: Select all
Make sure to restart the computer after the following procedure.
Run REGEDIT, open up the following folders:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
After clicking on {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} you should see two settings on the right-hand side:
"Upperfilters"
"Lowerfilters"
Click on each of them, press DELETE and click YES

I banned anyone from installing itunes on my video editing computer a long time ago. Every time a member of my family (usually number "2" son) did so it messed up my Video Editing programs - and not just the Ulead one's.
I would then spend quite some time removing it all again.
I thought it was just a problem unique to myself but apparently not.

Hi,
I don't have MF6 (MF5+) and use an old version of iTunes (4.7.1) that does what I need without the newer bloated QuickTime versions.
Anyway, it might not help but I always check all program options and every startup item (services and registry too) of any installed software.
My notes about the iTunes installation on my system:
did not install desktop shortcuts
did not use iTunes as default player for audio files
did not use QuickTime as default player for media files
iTunes setup:
disable automatic internet connection
disable automatic updates
do not choose 1 click shopping
QuickTime 6.5.2:
disable automatic updates
disable tray icon
Services:
iPod Service: changed to Manual startup
(iTunes starts it anyway, so why have it running all the time)
Registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
delete QuickTime boot task entry
delete all iTunes or iPod startup items

iTunes complains about missing registry keys after applying the recommended registry edit to fix MF6.etech6355 wrote:Sounds like iTunes is also installing a driver and it's not getting along with MF.
Yes, it's clear that iTunes/QT install a driver, but I can state that
iTunes + MF4 -> happiness
Same iTunes + MF6 -> dead optical drives
That suggests to me that the problem is MF6. Unfortunately it's also true that whatever MF6 is doing isn't removed by uninstalling it.

Gateway Quad Core Vista 2G Mem 500meg on NV video card. And guess what, same problem. It didn't rec'd my burner. But knowing abit and remembering the days of the old dos problems of the 80s , there is a simple fix. Its the disc. Some disc are not fomatted for this program. Load the disc - check empty disc info. If the info shows blocks the disc is formatted. Never use Fuji disc , they are not formatted.

The solution that worked for me .......
Here is the solution to this problem. I had the exact same thing happen, I found this post and none of the responses helped me. I finally went to Microsoft (spit!) and found this answer in their KB. I performed the required steps using regedit and everything worked perfectly after 1 reboot and without having to reinstall XP.
