MPEG2-compliant files are encoded

Post by Erik1967 »

Hi,

I've created several mpeg2-compliant files using the program Winavi-convertor. VS10+ offers to possibility not to encode mpeg2-files if you burn the project to disc.
Is there any way to do is in DVD-workshop (I couldn't find this option)?

BTW, I'm asking this not just to save cpu-time but especially cuz I'm afraid it might result in a poorer quality than the original mpeg2-file.. is this assumption correct?

I'm sure this has already been answered n times in this forum :? :?

You have the possibility to encode or not re-encode compliant files separately for video and audio. Open the respective tabs in Edit and you will see a checkbox "Convert to Disc Template" in each.

If your file is compliant, it should be clear for both, but you can force a re-encode, if you want. If it is not compliant, the box will be checked and greyed out, so that you cannot force it not to be encoded.

Sorry, I'll search first next time.
Anyway, the files created by Winavi are not compliant. I also created some files with VS10+ and they are compliant :P
According to the program GSpot the files created by Winavi are MPEG2-encoded. Nevertheless DVD-workshop doesn't think so.
However, the files encoded by VS10+ contain more information according to GSpot. It's the Pixel Aspect Ratio, Display Aspect Ratio and "dislay_size from sequence_display_extension".
Maybe there's are tricky way to edit the MPEG2-files created by Winavi, in order to make sure DVD-workshop recognizes the MPEG2-format?

I believe you may be misunderstanding what "compliant" means.

All grass is green
All that's green is not grass

All DVDs are MPEG-2 (not strictly true, but near enough)
All MPEG-2 files are not DVD-compliant

The rules for compliance are very strict, but there are almost literally a 1000 ways to ensure any MPEG-2 file is not compliant. I have never tried using your software, but just a minor departure, while keeping legitimately within the MPEG-2 rules, may be sufficient to not be DVD-compliant. If WS-2 says that either the video or audio (or both) is not compliant, then I think you should believe it.

In addition to compliance: check your mpeg2 files for:
- field orientation (upper/lower)
- tv system (PAL/NTSC)
- max bitrate video and audio
Compare these with the template you want to use for the DVD creation.
Only if field and tv system are the same as the template and your video bitrate is lower than the one specified for the template, a smart rendering is possible.
In all other cases, DWS will automatically convert your files to fit the template.
