I regularly (no, always) suffer with 'clipping' or some size reduction of images or stills in a PAL UVS slideshow . As I understand, the suggested or recommended size should be 768 x 576 - but should an allowance be made for 'overscan'? If so what is the best possible size.
Several past topics have raised this problem and the answer is generally "resize in Photoshop to 768x576". But then others suggest loss of picture size is due to overscan! So there must be a size that encompasses the overscan problem? Anyone know? I just want the full picture.

You should allow 10% for over scan. What this means is that:
When viewed on a computer monitor you see edge to edge.
When viewed on a TV you lose the edges.
To prevent this you should keep all titles within what is termed the Title Safe Area. (Add a title to a video and on the preview screen you will see the title safe area guidelines)
This will also apply to the content of your video and you photo slide shows.
you need to keep those heads and toes within that same title safe area.

Thanks again both. Like the idea of a border - if it infringes slightly on the actual shot, it would be better than the black unused areas in portrait orientation pics. I find it quite frustrating that one cannot avoid those black areas without cropping to an unrealistic degree to enable screen filling.

I have made a slide show using B/W images for the background, images slightly out of focus. Transition X-Fade ( Render to DV-Avi)
Using the same images in colour, in focus, I create a second show, same duration.
Random Transitions ( Render to Dv-Avi)
Place the B/W in the top track and the colour show in the overlay track,
Adjust size of video in overlay. Add Audio Render to Mpeg.
The Border option also works well. Especially with transitions, Flying Boxes etc show the borders, good effect.
If you have a photo editor use the batch convert to edit your images, makes life easy.
