MF 6 plus - crash on DVDMF.exe - uvHTMPEG2.dll

Post by tizzy »

The program crashes a short while after opening the launcher screen or else when pressing most any button

I've removed all video codecs from the system
I have installed the latest MF patch, that is version 7.1.100.1248
The system and drivers are pretty much up2date

(I use Kaspersky Internet 6.0 which might or might not have something to do with it)

Any idea's before I start mucking around with ini files? All help is appreciated.

NOTE: I don't know what that particular error means.
The program crashes a short while after opening the launcher screen or else when pressing most any button
This happens before you load-in any video files? It's interesting that the failure is in an "MPEG-2" DLL, like maybe it's trying to decode or encode an MPEG-2 video file...

All of my crashes have been caused by "bad" video files. (Most of these files play OK, but have caused trouble when I tried to edit them, convert them, or make DVDs from them.)

If you do have a bad MPEG-2 file, there may be ways to "repair" it, but that may have nothing to do with your problem...

Hi Doug, the error is not mpg-file related. I'm not able to get any further than the launcher, iow just watching the openingscreen (various function choices like: make movie; or copy dvd; or make slideshow etc). pops up the error. I renamed the dll and got an DVDMF.ini error but havent traced any further yet. Funny thing was that the actual moviemaker did then start up.

There are other codecs on your computer that the program doesn't like or isn't compatible with. Maybe you have installed one of the codec packs or something.
Either way, there is an audio or video codec installed on your computer that MF can't read which generates the error.

I actually doubted whether the codecs have something to do with it because the error occurs without actually activating any of the functionalities, but I had suspected as much and so deleted all videocodecs from the system as posted earlier. All codec packs were removed way prior to installing MF. The only videocodecs on the system now are those installed by MF like divX.

Replacing them wont be as difficult as replacing the audio codecs though and I'm a little worried about just removing those, but seeing as you've seconded my suspicion I'll start on the mp3 codecs first and see where it gets me.

UPDATE:
I've switched all audio codecs off (instead of removing them) to no avail. Removing all videocodecs doesn't seem to be effective, after a reboot some reappear and I suspect they are part of the XP subsystem. Any other idea's?
Here's a list of the no-go-away codecs

Audio codecs will conflict same as video codecs.
To bad under windows it's not that easy to remove all the codecs.
If you had an ATI capture card (or had one installed & removed it) when you remove the ati program & drivers it leaves some codecs behind & installed. Only one example because many video/audio programs do this.

I've found when you run the launcher screen it doesn't seem to look for the codecs on the computer until you lauch the actual program(s).

I could duplicate your exact problem by installing some older ati capture drivers, even after removing the ati drivers via add/remove the program would still crash.

Maybe you could install a fresh copy of XP on another drive or partition (boot from the XP installation CD). Video/Audio apps run alot better without any virus protection and other programs installed.

Hi etech, thanks for the input

too true, I finally had to edit the registry to remove some of them, specifically the Anglepotion codec was a bit of a bother. Still no joy tho

which is why its peculiar that the error pops up without actually activating anything from the launcher

No ati here, never have had either. Now you wouldnt happen to have a similar list of installed codecs at that time I suppose?

incredibly enough, it might prove necessary but surely ulead\corel will have run into similar before.. surely they should know the common culprits.. I have yet to receive a reply tho, so will wait a bit.

Hi,

Just a hunch.. How about trying this?

Just change the 5.0 to 6.0..

Hope this would help.

Thanks, I'll give it a go tomorrow when I've got more time on my hands. Pity that the helpdesk haven't let themselves be heard yet.

update: 1) the total remove and reinstall of dvdmf didnt work and 2) the helpdesk turned the question down because it's a TBYB version.

How'm I supposed to try it if they can't help me get it to work? Funny way of building customer relations or selling your product for that matter. Am I now supposed to buy it so they can subsequently tell me officially they don't know how to fix the problem (seeing as there's no mention of it anywhere in the archives) or is there some kind of money back garuantee?

I would go for the simple solutions first. With a problem relating to a specific dll I normally do a search of my hard drive (make sure to include system files & hidden files) and see if there is more than one copy of the particular dll file in question.

Then I place copies of each in a temporary directory.
Example - suppose you find 3 matching files.

c:\temp\version1\
c:\temp\version2\
c:\temp\version3\

Now rename all of the original dll files by changing the file extension from dll to dllx (simple enough to change it back again if needed)

Then copy/paste the file from
c:\temp\version1\

If it works, fine if it doesn't try again with the file from
c:\temp\version2\

You would be surprised how many dll errors I have fixed over the years by using this system. Sometimes a new dll file causes problems that an older one does not, its a matter of trial and error.

I did a search for uvHTMPEG2.dll on my system and discovered 4 copies

I actually have tried this but the only dll found was the original install and then the update. Both run into a problem, but thanks anyway.

A virgin XP will probably work but thats a rather impractical solution and will definitely be the last resort, the last but one being to try a different package, although nothing looks(looked, but now who knows) to be as good as DVDMF.

I'll keep on looking for a conflict somewhere and else start fiddling with the .ini files. All help is welcome.

I just purchased a Dell mobile with
Vista as its operating system. I have Kworlds usb tv capturing device hooked to the vcr and the mobile. The video stream appears on my computer, however; when I hit the capture button, only 3 seconds worth is captured in the step 2 of 3 of the DVD MovieFactory version 4 and version 6(tyby).
France had suggested to the originator of this thread to simply upgrade to ver 6. Is ver 6 Vista compatible?
I ask this because an error will display that the video stream has not been captured and possible file corruption exist. Also the program freezes and indicates the program is not responding.

tizzy,
I finally had to edit the registry to remove some of them
The Radlight Filter Manager 1.5 or Softella Filter Manager 0.5 can be very helpful with codec issues... if you know what you are doing.

Your screenshot was not the MF launcher, but the MF application (dvdmf.exe). This means the application is crashing, not the launcher. This also means it is possibly a codec problem...

I'm not familiar with APmpg4v1.dll (but I don't know lots of things :-)

I have "only" 1 DivX codec version on my machine, 6.4.0. You have 2.
