VS 10+ trouble capturing MP4

Post by sethseth »

It doesn't matter what file I try to capture. I get the same error message:

The file [*.mp4] contains no video data.

Has anyone been able to resolve this?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums,

What OS are you running, XP or Vista? Vista does not support capturing MPEG-4.

* WinDVD 7, PocketDV show, and Cool3D are not supported.

What are you capturing from? Why are you capturing to MP4?

In general, you shouldn't be capturing to MPEG-4 (or any other compressed format) unless you have a video source that's already compressed.

For example, if you are capturing from a MiniDV camera, you should capture to AVI/DV, and then you can use Video Studio to convert/compress it to MPEG-4, if that's what you want.

If you are capturing from an MPEG-4 camera, try using the software that came with the camera to copy the files from the camera to your hard drive.

Thanks for the replies. I'm running XP and trying to work with snippets of video downloaded from google video. They are mp4s on my hard drive.

Not gonna work, huh?

You might get it to work. However mp4 files are very (not just highly), but very highly compressed. How much time do you have to let it sit and render, if you do make it to that stage? Depending on the total length of your project, it could take a day or more to render. Then VS may fail in the attempt.

Simply put... It is designed to be viewed on a PC, streamed over the internet. Not edited.. Good Luck to you..;)
