capturing trouble with VS 11 but not VS 8

Post by confused user »

I've been using VS 8 with Dazzle hardware with no problems. When I try to capture my own home made VHS tapes with VS 11 I get a message saying the tapes are copy protected. I never had any problem capturing the tapes with VS 8. Does anyone know why this is happening.

I am not sure why this is so, but you are not the first Dazzle user to report this. I had not even known, in fact, that you could capture from a Dazzle device with any version of VS. This is because they are made by Pinnacle which holds tight to its proprietary technological secrets and usually makes sure only its own software (Pinnacle Studio) works properly with the Dazzle device.

However, there is a major difference between VS8 and VS11+, quite apart from all the bells and whistles in the latter. And that is that the new owners Corel appear to have done away with the Direct Show .avi and mpeg codecs of previous versions, and substituted them with what appears to be a one size fits all InterVideo (who took over Ulead before Corel gobbled them up too) capture module called the 'IVI Capture Component'. This appears to be causing a number of users (including myself) grief on a variety of fronts.

We understand that a patch is being prepared for VS11 to fix a number of errors, mainly in the High Definition area. But I am hopeful something might also be done here too.

But in the meantime, I would advise you (as long as you are not working with VS11 on a Vista computer) to continue using VS8 to capture from the Dazzle device, since it seems to work. Then simply open them in VS11 for editing. (VS8, of course, will not work on a Vista computer.)

And don't be too distressed at the idea of having to use two programs. A lot of us here use a lot more than that for any one project. I for instance nearly always use a little program called WinDV for my DV captures. Then I edit in VS, add titles made in either Cool 3D or Xara 3D, add transitions from Canopus VideoFX or Adorage, occasionally add other effects using Adobe After Effects, and then author my DVD either with Movie Factory 6 or, increasingly, DVD Workshop. The more you get into video editing, the more you will realise that certain programs do certain things better than others...

Thank you for answering so promply. I'm only using a trial version of VS 11 to see if it's worth the money to upgrade. Do you see any reason I should upgrade if I'm not doing anything high def yet? Also, do you have any idea what the video to dvd stand alone converters do to convert the files. That may be a solution for me on the videos that I don't plan to edit.

Quite a few of us are having regrets about jumping in so quickly to buy VS11. I only did so as I have a new computer running Vista, and VS11 is compatible with Vista. But if you are happy enough with VS8 for the moment, then stick with it until the problems with VS11 are ironed out.

As for third party video converters, I don't have wide experience with them. The one I use most is called SUPER (and uses capitals!!) You will find a link to it here http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 9741#59741 It's free and seems to do a good job.
