WinDVD 8 Platinum, Vista and DirectX problems

Post by tobias »

I have had WinDVD for 6months now , no problems with XP but i just changed my PC to a HP Pavilion 7755uk with Vista Home Premium.

I tried to install WinDVD but it failed to download the directX 8.1 SDK update from Feb 2006 and quit.

After searching on the internet and finding nothing, I tried to download directX 8.1 directly from Microsoft and got the same reply, failed to download, try later.

I disabled my firewall, checked my security settings and still nothing.

Has anyone else had this problem and been able to solve it ?

Thanks

Well, Vista comes with DirectX 10. So you don't need to install any older version. Just install WinDVD and be happy. :)

Well don't you think if it was as easy as that I would be happy ? I know Vista has directx 10.

I don't choose to try and download directx 8.1 the windvd installation DEMANDS that it tries to download it and then quits when it can't.

I have downloaded the latest version of WinDVD from the website today and the same thing happens, the program says it needs to download directx 8.1 before beginning installation and then quits when it can't.

On a further note, I am relieved to see that I am not the only one having the same problem

although it's depressing to see that neither the admin of this site or tech support ( who have not answered me ) seem to know how to deal with the problem, looks like I have wasted $ 60.

OK success, I finally figured out that my Vista Home Premium didn't come with ANY DirectX pre-installed ( don't know why as it is a pre-installed operating system from HP ) that is why WinDVD tried to update with DirectX 8.1 .

I finally managed to download directx from the Microsoft website manually and then install on my HDD.

WinDVD then started although it was a headache as it said I had to close the install shield at one point to update certain files ( bit stupid as the install field was WinDVD 8 itself ) . I ignored that and then it installed OK. end of problem
