MSP Version 2.5 Can anyone evaluate

Post by screwball2 »

Last night, I purchased Ulead Media Studio Professional V.2.5. from eBay. I currently use UVS 9. Can any of you expert mediators (or others) advise as to the benefits (or otherwise) of using the Ulead MSP 2.5 against UVS9? Am I going backwards or forwards? I am aware that Version 2.5 is way, way out of date, but are there advantages over the latest UVS home edition due to the fact it was/is a Pro edition (and originally expensive)? Could the fact that a somewhat outdated 'Pro' edition, could still be a better bet than UVS 9? Please do not recommend the latest edition, as I don't have not the funds at this moment to purchase it, and to be honest, not professional enough from 'hands on' experience to warrant the purchase. Nevertheless, my whole waking hours revolve around my Ulead compilations, and would like to progress using a 'Pro' version albeit outdated. I look upon it as a slow learning curve. If I can handle V.2.5 then I can move forward in easy steps.
If I can suggest an analogy, a ten year old Formula 1 car is incomparable to a current F1 vehicle - But! it is superbly faster than a new family road vehicle (Ulead VS 9).
All and any comments are very welcome.

MSP2 came out over 10 years ago. At that time, the only OS versions were NT3 and Win 95, I believe. I cannot remember whether it ran under the clunky NT3, but it certainly ran under MS-DOS based W95. You have XP, which is not DOS-based. I have very severe doubts whether it will work at all. I also doubt whether anyone here has a sufficiently good memory to be able to help you for any version earlier than 7, 6 at the outside.

Anyway, if you do manage to get it working, I think you will find that it is inadequate for working with modern video (no DV, no HD, no DVD, no DD etc.). You would probably be forced to work with codecs like Indeo and MJPEG. You have UVS9: compare them for yourself if you can.

I did originally have a version 2 because it came bundled with my then capture card (Matrox) and , yes, it was MJpeg capture.

I quickly migrated to V5. And then to V7. Older versions may well run in XP under compatabity mode.

However, no version before 7 will edit mpeg-2 (think I'm right on this one)
