HDV freezes and crashes in the capture step
I have a new Sony HDR-HC3 cam. I have been trying to capture and edit HDV video. I have followed all recommended procedures. The playback in the preview window while capturing is choppy: audio cuts in and out/video contains artifacts. After capturing, I switch to the edit step. It won't switch! Ulead VS10+ freezes and has to be shut down via the task manager.

You really don't give us any info to go on. Your system specs are not completed, you don't tell us how you captured your clips, or what your clip and project properties are. Without this info it is virtually impossible to give you any kind of answer.

Capturing HDV troubles
HP AMD Turion 64 ML-37 With 2.0GHz 1.0Gb ram
Windows XP with SP2 This is my laptop.
I captured using VS10+ using no special settings. Evidentally, HDV was automatically detected, for the captured file has all textbook properties of HDV:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 1440 x 1080, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(MPEG-2), 16:9
Video data rate: 25000 kbps
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
What can I do now to solve the choppy audio, the packets of video noise that come streaking across the preview window, and the freezing up of the entire system once I click "Stop Catpure"?

I would have thought your computer might not have sufficient 'grunt' for HD capturing... Have you turned off all background applications to free up resources?
I know that my new HP Pavilion dv9203tx laptop which has a Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz chip, an NVidia Go7600 graphics card with 250 MB of its own RAM and 2 GB of system RAM, running VS11+ on Vista, has difficulty capturing even SD video via Firewire without problems unless I turn off background applications.

Some progress so far
Yes, I always close all applications when working in VS. But just now I disabled Java, which I had read sometime somewhere might cause a conflict. HDV now captures smoothly!
The other problem I had--freezing when I Stop Capture--magically disappears when I shut off the camcorder. The program then switches--as it should--to the Edit step.
I have only captured a minute or two of HDV so far, but the results are now encouraging.
Any comments?

HDV Split?
"HDV Split" sounds like a good answer. But I cannot find locate it anywhere within the VS10+ button gallery or in the written manual. However, there is an option for the instant playback target to be the Dv camcorder, and not the preview window. Is this what you mean by "HDV Split?"
Yes, I am using Ulead Video Studio version 10+.

As I understand it, HDVSplit is a third party program, and I think it is free. Do a Google search for it or check it out on our freebies page http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 091#121091

HDV Split files mismatch
I downloaded HDV Split and the required audio decoder. Capturing is very smooth and also has split by scene. I like that. Thanks for recommending. However, when I try to load these files into VS10+, I get an error message: FILE FORMAT MISMATCH! Seems these .m2t files cannot be accepted by VS?
I thought .m2t was the standard HDV file extension. I tried renaming with .mpg, for example, but Ulead will not be fooled. Is there a trick to getting HDV Split files into Video Studio?

HDV Split works
Still having the same old problems capturing HDV within VS10+(see above). Some background process(es) causing a conflict? My year-old pc too old, too slow? On the bright side, HDV Split captures perfectly, and now with the VS10 patch installed I can import the converted files for editing. So this is the workflow I will use. Thanks to all for the help.
