MF6 looses date/time info in captured file if you edit it

Post by pictureframe »

For me MovieFactory 6 is almost perfect, but I have come across one problem that has put my excitement on hold. I want to use MF 6 to capture/edit all my DV camcorder holiday films and move them to DVD. The major feature that drew me to this product was that the date/time info of the captured DV film can be placed in the subtitles of the created DVD. Perfect for archiving my holiday films. The major flaw (for me) is that if you edit the captured film in any way (multi-trim or join etc) then the date/time info is lost! The date/time info is also lost if you simply export the film clips to a new file (even if you do not convert the format of the clips). A second flaw is that the date/time info is only stored in the captured file if you catpure to mpeg format, the date/time information is not stored if you capture to AVI file. (Strangely, I imported into MF 6 an old AVI file captured from a different non-ulead package and the date/time information was shown by MF 6!)
Have any of you folks had experience of storing the DV date/time info in the DVD subtitles?

Hi FRance,
Thanks for replying. The dv cam is a JVC GR-DVX707EK miniDV camcorder. It is connected to the PC using firewire and is detected automatically by MovieFactory 6. The PC is running Vista. When I capture the video I use the MovieFactory 'Capture Video' option. I've tried capturing in most of the available formats including 'DVD-HQ 4:3 (Dolby Digital)' which is MPEG format, 'DVD-HQ 4:3 (20min/1.4G......' also MPEG format, also the 'MPEG' option and the 'AVI' option. All options are for the PAL system.
Hope that might give some assistance

thanks !! :D

Hi again,

Please make sure that the settings in your dv camera is on. If you are recording in real time, streaming from the dv cam directly to the pc through firewire, I'm sorry but I think MF6 doesn't support that. However, if you are just transfering files from your dv tape, definitey MF6 can support the time and date as its subtitle (provided that you recorded video file contains date and time). The option of time and date as subtitle can be found in the edit subtitle dialog box. Just check the time and date checkboxes to enable them as a subtitle for your video. You can even modify the font size, style and color of your subtitle. (in your case, the time and date).

If this is a bit confusing for you, please do reply.

Hope this would help. :)

Hi FRance,

Thanks for your advice

I am transferring the video from the dv tape as a file, as you suggest, and when I produce the DVD the date/time information is produced in the DVD subtitles perfectly.
The only problem is that if I use any of the powerful video editing features of MF6, such as multi-trim or join etc, then the date/time information is not available for the edited video clip.
It¡¦s not a major problem, I suppose. It just means I have to be very precise when I capture the video because if I want to keep the subtitles I can¡¦t edit the video files in MF6.

Thanks again for your help
