16.9 Problem with VideoStudio

Aspect Ratio
No doubt I have again missed something. I find the small handbook a little inconvenient - you cannot put it down, it closes up. But.... not an excuse.
I recorded a video of my daughter's wedding in widescreen. It has presented in an awkward way inasmuch as the picture is letter box and is slightly squashed vertically which I hate. No matter how I set the TV the picture is still out of wack.
No doubt I have missed something. There must be a selection opportunity I have missed.
It worries me that programs are called intuitive, even easy, and I get stuck everytime
Advise appreciated.

By the way; re setting before recording.
It may impact on advice given, my digicamcorder is a Panasonic. With all the preferences including two for Panasonic the situation is problematic.
The handbook either does not mention it or I can't find it.

When capturing via firewire did you select the capture format as DV?
What are the video files properties? (right click a clip and select properties.)
If you captured 16:9 correctly then the preview screen will view in proportion.
There will be no indication of the video being ¡¥Squashed vertically¡¦
Saying that:- your clip may display smaller than normal if viewed using the wrong project aspect ratio. (but not distorted)
From your posts the indications are that you captured 16:9 as 4:3.
So we need to know the video files properties.
(right click a clip in the timeline and select properties.)

16:9
Properties.
Microsft AVI Files - Open DML
Frame rate 25,0000 frames/sec
Video
Compression DV Video encoder - Type 1
Attribues 24 bits 720X 576 16:9
Audio
DV Audio Pal
The preview screen still presents as vertically squashed but on my Widescreen TV the picture is the correct size but still vertically squashedl.
Using the handset control for the TV I get to a smallish 4:3 correct proportions. Movie expand as my handset calls it which normally expands 4:3 to fill more of the screen produces a parger picture that almost fills the screen leaving a narrow black border.
In project properties file/ project properties when I open up the project.
PAL (25fps)
MPEG Files
24 Bits 720X576 25 fps
Lowerfield First
DVD-Pal) 16:9
I think that is all you wanted.
Stephen told me to access his text file for the above.
A question?
If this file has Mpeg properties does that mean it is region free?
Would be a handy format to send files to friends in the USA!
JR
PS My brain hurts.
PPS I will be up your way at the weeken. watching the weather. Hope you don't have problems.

Hi JR
Ideally your project properties should match your video file properties.
Go to File-Preferences-Tick ¡¥Show Messages when inserting the first video to Timeline¡¦
Start a new project.
Insert your video, a message will prompt you, select details to view the video properties,
This is what I see for my video properties.:-
Microsoft AVI files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 16:9, 25 fps
Lower Field First
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- PAL, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo
Select Yes/Ok
If your video is 16:9 then you should see the video as letterboxed. A black border top and bottom. The sides should fill the screen. No borders. The video should be in proportion not distorted.
Region free:-
All dvd¡¦s made with Video Studio are region free.
If you are sending dvd¡¦s to the US then you may have to convert to Ntsc and not Pal
Not all US players play Pal format.
But first send a Pal version first, if it plays then you have no problem.

16:9 anomilies
Many thanks...
This evening I will get into this. Too many interuptions during the day.
If only Ulead would have their handbook bigger, so it lies flat.
Having said that, I may get a handle on it all pretty soon.
The transition library seems a little spare but I will cross that bridge later.
You know your stuff and I appreciate your time.

Still something is not right
Now you are going to get fed up with me.
I have done everything you said, matched properties etc.
On the time line the picture appears correctly proportioned for 16:9
On the preview screen it is letter box vertically squashed
When burned I get a small 4:3 pic on the TV, acres of black around it.
If I go to the enhanced 4:3 the picture apparently correctly proportioned with a narrow black band around it. How it will play on someone else's TV I don't know as each has slightly different approaches to the aspect ratio that suits it seems.
I have checked and double checked, see your last post. I seem to be doing everything right. I have scrutinised the the project properties very carelly.
Also the ratio is wrong in the various preview screens up to burning.

Hi JR
No I do not get fed up, well not easily.
You said.
Lets try again.
Go to File-Preferences-tick- ¡¥Show messages when inserting first video into Timeline¡¦
When the first clip is inserted to the timeline you will be prompted to change the project properties. (but only the first clip, so start a new project)
Now Go-File Preferences-Capture Tab-Tick Press OK to Capture.
Start a New Project. ( File-New Project)
Capture Tab
Capture Video
Connect camera (Camera type should be seen in Source box)
VS will take control of the camera
Select DV as the Format
The capture properties can be seen in the information box below the preview screen.
Indicating Avi 720 x 576 DV Type 1 if you do not see type 1 go to Options Cogwheel.
The preview screen will view in full if 4:3 capture
The preview screen will view as letterboxed for 16:9 (black bars top and bottom.
The frame content should be in proportion.
At this point do you see 16:9 letterbox.
Now press Capture a window will prompt you to start capture.
Capture a minute or so as a test.
Stop capture, a window will prompt you to change the project settings to match the video.
Press Details to see settings the Video properties should indicate 16:9
Press YES.
Select The Edit tab to go to timeline.
The preview should show as 16:9 letterboxed.
A further test.
File Preferences-Change the background colour to anything but black.
Drag your video clip to the Overlay track.
The clip should display as a smaller version.
Do you see any black borders as part of this frame.
PS If your coming to Leeds this weekend-- you bring some good weather with you and i will look at your tape.
