New MF4 Bug

Post by lefty78312 »

I bought MF4 about a week ago and have successfully burned about 8 DVDs with it. It seems to have problems actually burning DVDs, but that's not the issue. Since last Sunday, I've just been creating DVD folders and burning with Nero, but today I hit a new snag.

I recorded 2 movies on my DVD recorder this morning. I trimmed, authored and burned the first one O.K., but I ran into a very strange problem with the 2nd one. I trimmed and authored the 2nd DVD, but when I pressed the "Burn" button (to create DVD folders), an error box popped up with no message, i.e., the box popped up a few seconds after I pushed the "Burn" button, complete with a triangle-shaped yellow alert box, but no text or error message of any kind. And it wouldn't create DVD folders or do anything else. Keep in mind; I only create DVD folders with MF4; I don't do the actual burning with it. I not only retried it several times; I completely blew the project out; closed MF4, and recreated it from scratch with the exact same results. For some unknown reason, it won't let me create DVD folders now.

Just for informational purposes, my machine is an AMD 1.4 GHz, running Windows XP Pro with 640 MB of DDR RAM. I have lots of disk space on both of my active partitions. As nearly as I can tell, everything else is running perfectly. I always insert a blank DVD-R in my DVD burner before creating folders because I know it reads the disk type before creating the folders. Not that that should make any difference.

Has anyone else had this problem, and does anyone have any ideas what to do about it?

Thanks,

Hi,
In the MF4 "ReadME" docs they make many suggestions for problems.
I remember one suggestion was to increase the virtual memory size
on the disk. I think I may have to try that although I have 1 gig main mem with
approx 750megs available before running MF4.
I've always let windoze handle the memory with no problems.

In my MF4 there seems to be memory glitches or soemthing. I can
create 1 slideshow no problem. If I click on the create slideshow again
2nd time, to soon before disk activity stops an error is generated.
I don't know if the disk activity is still re-loading the main working timeline
screen or not. Whatever, I have to go s....l.....o.....w...... or an error is
generated.
Like running a 286 again. Ah, not that bad.

MF4 writes the main ini files in the <all users -> applications <dir(s)>
They are also writing ini's in your <user_name -> applications <dir(s)>
Maybe deleting those or moving them will default back to the originals
in the <all users>. Don't know, worth a try.

Thankyou for Beta-Testing MF4.

MF4 will not burn DVD

Hey Maddrummer 3301,

It sure seems you have been around the quirks of DMF... we could sure use your help at the "MF4 will not burn DVD" thread - any suggestions?

Hello,

I simply haven't had enough time to work with the new release
to confirm/work with the problems.

I would first eliminate the obvious and uninstall the packet writing
software. Especially if you are aready using a stable product like Nero.
I re-installed and left out the drag&drop thing along with the packet
writing feature as HtChein suggested.
The program doesn't load as many resident drivers then. But, according
to the instructions you need those loaded to import a VR disk.
(Not sure whether they meant "edit" a -vr disk).

Sometimes you can't have a dvd or cd in the burner(s) when starting
ulead products because another packet wriiting program takes
control of the dvd. One usually has to insert the dvd after the main
program is opened. Depends on your machine and other software
installed on the machine.

Computers have many quirks so is it the computer or the software.
Sometimes you don't have to finalize a dvd-rw recorded on a desktop
unit to import the -VR file. BUT, nero's packet writing program changes
the disk when you eject it making it unusable in the desktop recorder
forcing it to be re-formatted for use again. Always finalize the disk(-VR)
or if your editing it, Burn it using ulead and eject the disk before
exiting ulead.

On many computers if you have a dvd-ram or dvd-rw disk in the dvd
drive windows checks the drive upon startup. For some reason this
can cause the computer to reboot by itself.

MF4 seems to have a problem EDITING video with AC-3 2/0 audio.
The edited audio is corrupt.
A one time final conversion works changing or recording AC-3 but
can't edit the video file containing AC-3.
Again it seems to be where the edited section is re-joined in the video
the process has a problem.

I wouldn't count on editing mpg2 files and having the audio stay in sync.
You can edit them. Just don't rejoin the edited sections back together to
form 1 mpg2 file. As far as I know you can Cut/Extract/Trim.

Slideshow works nice, stay 500 pictures or below per slideshow.

Mullti-trim works if you turn your volume dial completely
counter-clockwise or change the audio level to "0".
They have to work on the multi-trim thing.(again, rejoining).
Maybe the source files have to be in a specific format.

The MF4 suite(disc creator) is big, many programs.

Hope this helps,

I highly appreciate your time to write such a well informed reply! As I am more of a newbie I'll need time to digest your comments. As a first pass, the issue of when to insert the DVD blank raised a flag with me; I hadn't been paying attention to my DVD-insertion sequence, but sure have been frustrated because, while using the exact same buttons/options, DMF4 would produce such different results. Next I'll try your suggestions for when to insert the DVD blank.

Please help me understand what you mean by "packet writing software" when you say "I would first eliminate the obvious and uninstall the packet writing software . Especially if you are aready using a stable product like Nero." Just today I received a response from Ulead tech support acknowledging Ulead/Nero conflicts; they suggested not only uninstalling/reinstalling DMF4 (which I had already tried) but also doing same to Nero (which I can't do because It came pre-installed on my PC) - I sure think Ulead is simply floundering on this problem. Soon I will share this new Ulead input on the "MF4 will not burn DVD" thread; and also suggest to the people following that thread to come and see your comments above.

Again, Thank you!

Re: Removing “Ulead Data-Add in”…

Re: Removing “Ulead Data-Add in”… which as a newbie am assuming to be synonymous with the “data write” thing mentioned in above/recent messages, at
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=2492 I just noticed htchien’s 3/29/05 message stating: “If you wish to remove Ulead Data-Add in your system, select Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->Ulead Data-Add 2.0 and click on Remove.”

As I’m out of town & not at my home PC, I have to wait before I can try this; has anyone tried this?

Hi,

There are 2 ways to remove data-add.

Un-install MF4 or remove data-add from the control_panel add/remove software.

If you un-install MF4:
Clean-up the computers temp files by running the XP clean-up utility.
(When you install the downloaded version of MF the program creates
a mirrored image of the installation CD in the temp directory. Then runs the
setup.exe executable from the temporary directory). It's important to keep
your temporary directories clean on a computer system.

In the new installation process you will confronted with a splash screen
asking "Complete or Custom"
Choose "Custom" <enter>

Another installation screen will appear with a list of the programs.
I would uncheck the data-add and the quickdrop.
At least for now this is a workaround because of conflicts with the program.

Many programs pro and semi-pro can burn the dvd.
But, all these programs have the "OPTION" to create dvd folders or create
an .iso file.
A "DVD Folder" is a directory created on your harddisk that is the SAME
directory and FILES that would be created on the created DVD.
Creating a "Dvd folder" is fast and easy. This also allows you to "Play" the
video_dvd the same as if you burnt the dvd. Using this method you run
a software player like "Power_Dvd" or "Win_Dvd" (I think uleads dvd player
will also work).
When you use these players in the menu choices you select
"Play Dvd from harddisk(harddrive)".
This enables you to TEST the dvd you have created.
This is also the method that almost all pro's use to create their projects.
This saves time and stops wasting dvd's if somethings wrong.

Creating a dvd_folder (VIDEO_TS folder) allows you to:
Check for spelling mistakes in the menus.
Check for menu's and links working properly.
Check for background and audio files you may have inserted etc.
Check for correct chaptering.
The dvd will play exactly as the dvd in a player.

Creating an .ISO file is a condensed IMAGE of the dvd. It is one file and
can be loaded by almost any burning program and the program will burn
the dvd using the .ISO image file.
The .ISO method actually burns the dvd so if there's mistakes on the dvd then the dvd isn't correct and useless.

Using the "Dvd Folders" or .ISO creation allows you to burn the dvd from
either Ulead's burning program or "Nero".

In Nero you select "DVD-Video".
In the compilation window you then DRAG the contents of the VIDEO_TS
folder on the harddisk to the VIDEO_TS folder in the compilation window.

Using Nero is a much better method. Many people use DVD+R's.
Many desktop players won't play a DVD+R disk.
If your recorder supports it you can use NERO to change the "BOOKTYPE"
of the dvd+r to "DVD-ROM".
Insert the Dvd+R in the recorder and in the nero's creation screen
select "Recorder" from the top of the menu page.
Click on your recorder and another screen with information appears.
In this information screen and the lower left is an "Options" icon.
Click on that icon and if your burner will support it you can change the
booktype to "Dvd-Rom".
Now the Dvd+R after being burnt will play in a panasonic player and many
others that it wouldn't previously play in.

Sony dvd writer 700A can change booktype with the latest firmware update.
The sony 510a doesn't seem to support changing the booktype.
All Lite-On burners can change the booktype I think. Lite-On even has a
utility to run before you burn the dvd to do this. It's available at their website.

Hope this helps,

maddrummer3301 - THANKS!

Currently I'm out of town for a week, thus away from my PC/DMF4; as soon as I get back I will follow your fabulous step-by-step suggestions.

Hopefuly others will also benefit from your insights, including Ulead - if they even bother to monitor this forum.

Thank you,

Tom
