VideoStudio9 crashes

Post by paul85 »

I am editing videos from a recent trip. My Operating system is XP. The destination is my E drive, which currently says the following: Capacity: 74.5 GB; Used: 39.7 GB; Free Space: 34.7 GB.

When I try to play back any of the videos, VideoStudio9 shuts down abruptly after just a few seconds. I have tried playing back "project" and various clips, all with similar results.

I have about 80 minutes of material downloaded with some editing done, and have entered it into VS9 in 7 sections of 8 to 20 min each.

I just put my E Drive through defragmentation, figuring it was overdue, and it wouldn't hurt anything. But there was no improvement. It occurs to me that re-installing VideoStudio9 might be a solution. I have the disk.

What can I do to fix this? Thanks in advance.

thanks Paul85

VideoStudio9 crashes

Post by paul85 »

Thanks, France. Is the procedure you suggest a Clean Re-installation of the entire C drive, or does it just affect VS9? I hesitate to do the clean re-install, 'cause I might dump something I need to save.

It is just for the VS 9.. no harm will be done to your system or other applications as long as you follow the procedure properly. =)

What are the properties of your clips? You say "downloaded". Are they, in fact, downloaded from the Internet?

The "material" consists of videos taken on our recent vacation. I used a Canon Elura 100 camera (mini-tapes) to take the video, but I'm using my SONY Handycam DCR-HC42 camera as my editing camera. I put my exposed tapes into the SONY, which is hooked to my computer, and use VS9 to edit.

Hi Paul

How did you capture your video?
What are the capture properties?
Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, What are they?

Capturing your footage using Firewire connection to DV format is the best method.
This transfers / copies the data to your pc without re-coding.
What you have is what you get.

The files are Avi (Dv-Avi) at 13 Gb per hour.

If you captured to VS using another format, your properties could be.............

So what are your clip properties?

Hi Paul,

Some things I see:

You capture to DV Type-1 (excellent). :)

Now if your Edit File Format is your Project Properties "we have a problem Houston".
1. MPEG Files. Since you captured/transferred DV your Project Properties should match, ie; DV, not MPEG.

2. Did your camcorder actually record 16:9? If not then the aspect ratio should be 4:3. OR do you want your final project video file to be widescreen 16:9?

3. If your aspect ration is 4:3, then the frame size should be 720 x 480 not 840. (Ignore this line if it was just a typo).

4. In the General Tab of the Preferences dialog, check the box beside, Show message when inserting first video clip. This will prompt you when the Video clip and Project Properties do not match. It will ask if you want to change the Project Properties to match the videos.

5. You have Playback Target set to Dual Head Device. Do you have multiple monitors, or a TV that you preview your project on? If not then you should change that to Preview Window, to view it within VS.

I have done the clean re-installation as suggested by France, above. However, the program still crashes during editing. Before the clean re-install, the program would crash after about 10-15 seconds of play-back. Now is crashes when I go to the project and try to move to clip to edit, whether I use the slider or the arrow keys. I have had VS 9 for some time now, but this problem has only recently cropped up. Thank you to everyone for their suggestions.

I know VS9 had a problem with the Windows Installer. However it mainly affected capturing.

Ron... Thanks for the tips.

1. Yes, I recorded in 16:9.
2. The 840 was a misprint, as you suspected. frame size is 120 x 480

3. I have checked ¡§Show message when inserting first video clip¡¨

4. I have changed DUAL to Preview Window.

HOWEVER:

Within PROJECT PROPERTIES, there is a box area that says ¡§Project template properties¡¨ That is where it says ¡§Edit file format¡¨

I am offered only two choices.

a. MPEG Files
NTSC drop frame [29.97 fps]
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower field First
[DVD-NTSC], 16:9

b. Microsoft AVI files
NTSSC non-drop frame [30 fps]
Microsoft AVI files
24 Bits, 320 x 240, 30 fps
Lower Field First
Uncompressed

¡§DV¡¨ is not one of the choices here

You can see why I would opt for MPEG, given the two choices.

Thanks, Ron... and to all the others who are showing such an interest !!!!

In the Project Properties dialog window, change it to the AVI, then hit the Edit button, and the Project Options dialog box will open. It will have 3 tabs, Ulead VideoStudio, General, and AVI.

On the General Tab, you can set the Frame Rate (29.97), Frame Type (Upper Field First, Lower Field First, Frame Based), and Frame Size (720 x 480).

On the AVI tab set the Compression to DV Video Encoder Type-1, the audio should be DV Audio-NTSC, 44.100kHz, 16bit Stereo
