Okay... first I updated my profile (just need my motherboard info)

Now earlier today I went on youtube to watch some videos and I was getting no sound. I did a bit of searching and it was suggested that download K-Lite Codecs Pack... it comes with a codec tweak tool that will fix any broken audio. I did have on the computer before Ace Mega Codecs Pack. Of course I had to unistall that pack before I could install the K-Lite. I went on youtube and volume is back....
I later in the day tried one more time  to try and open up Ulead 9. And to my delight (but it didn't last long) it acutally took me to actual main page where the videos that I had inserted to work on a video were still there. A registration thing poped up but I just minimized it. I went to try and open up the project I was working on before all this happened. It retrieved it but the videos in the timeline were just black with no picture.
Then Ulead started to freeze up and then that error poped up again and Ulead shut down. I tried one more time and I got on again and this time I tried to insert a video ... it inserted but again the thumbnail wouldn't show a picture and when I tried to play back the video Ulead froze up again and the error poped up.

I don't know if me installing the K-Lite was just a coincidence that I was able to go a little further Ulead or the two have nothing to do with the other. Just thought I would mention it.

Now Trevor suggested I check out the link he provided about problems with Windows Installers.
I read through that thread and from what I understand Ulead won't work properly if it has Version 3 of Windows Installer. Someone in the thread posted to do a search on msi.dll and several different ones will come up.
I did a search on my computer and 5 msi.dll came up (three of them were Version 3 and the other two were versions 2)
Now the Version 2 Windows intallers that were found and it said they both wer the same versions "2.0.2600.1106" but the info for the folder they were in differed "C:\WINNT\$MSI31Unistall_kB8..." and the other"C:\WINNT\$NtServicePackUnistall..."
And my Version 3 Window Installer is in folder "C:\WINNT\System32"
I assume with the unistall mentioned above in the two Version 2 files that I Need to download Version 2 of Windows Intaller and get rid of version 3??
I also did this ....
START | RUN dialog box
%SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s
and press enter.
Now check the following two folders
Application
System
The clicked on Application and the last few errors I clicked on were Faulting Application for vstudio.exe and it said the faulting module "herdocdll.dll" and the other error had a faulting module "uvwmf" (those two were when I was able to get a little further with Ulead 9) I clicked on errors from yesterday and it said faulting modules "unknown". I did click on the site that was provided but everytime the page woudn't load.

Your problem could always have been (and remains) the multi-codec packs you have installed. From a video editing point of view, they are a very big no-no. They usually contain a large number of codecs from a variety of sources, thrown together with an eye to size, rather than taking into account any concerns about whether some or many of the installed codecs might conflict with each other or, worse, with other codecs already installed on your computer. Video Studio could just have been refusing to open because of such a conflict...

If you *have* to use a codec pack, say for your missing audio codec, you need to have an idea of which codec is involved. And then you just install that codec from the pack.

I think my advice would be to uninstall K-lite (if you can -- I don't believe that they can remove every last one of the installed codecs), and see if VS will run then.

Alright I removed K-Lite from my computer ... went to youtube and sound was fine.... I then opened up Ulead again and when I inserted a video (wmv) this time the thumbnail showed a picture. But when I went to go play the video back ... Ulead froze up again and error popped up etc.
I went back in again and this time I inserted an mpeg video... played it back with no problems. I then went to play again the wmv video and it froze up ulead again. I have worked before for the last two years before all this happened with wmv videos with NO problems at all. The only video formats that wouldn't work are quicktime and some avi files. So I always stuck with Mpg, Mpeg or wmv video formats when downloading clips I need. So why is it now that wmv videos freeze up?? They never did before. And for the longest time I had Ace Mega Codecs Pack. The reason I got that codec pack was their were a few videos that wouldn't playback the picture so it was suggested that I download the pack and I did and I was able watch the video... it didn't effect Ulead from what I could tell ... it was working the way it always did ...
Is the windows installers still something that should be addressed (see previous post)?

Perhaps you have a faulty WMV video. sometimes they appear to play back correctly in playback software such as Windows Media Player. Minor errors in the video file only rear their ugly head when the file is opned with a video editor.

Try opening a different wmv file.

I tried a different wmv video and Ulead still froze up and these are videos that I have used countless times before with NO problems. So why now.
This is frustrating! I appreciate all the help I have been getting but I really am at a lost as to what to do. *SIGH*

Let's roll back to where we were earlier. At least we now have a working copy of VideoStudio albeit with broken parts.

Do a search of your hard drive to see how many copies of these files you have. I just checked for herdocdll.dll and found 18 copies on my system.
Look for any in the installation directory -
C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 9.0 and rename it - simple x tagged onto the end will do e.g. herdocdll.dllx
Next copy/paste one of the other copies of herdocdll.dll to that directory.
Normally you go for the newest version though that does not always work and you may have to try previous versions instead.

Let me know the resulkts.

Okay I searched for how many copies of herdocdll.dll I have on my hard drive and only 1 came up. It was found in the installation directory.

I just want to verify before I continue do you still want me to rename that one file? Because you then mentioned that you wanted me to copy and past another herdocdll.dll file.

I worked with Ulead late last week and was able to insert mpeg videos and even some wmv videos. I was able to make up a cd (vcd) with no problems. There was one wmv file that wouldn't insert so I converted it over as an mpeg in Cimema Forge and then was able to insert it into Ulead. But there was two wmv files that wouldn't even convert or when I tried to insert them into Windows Movie Maker it told me that the file didn't exist or that it was corrupted. I haven't yet worked on a Ulead project yet. But when I playback any wmv files that the thumbnail photo does show up Ulead brings up the error and closes down. But I'm able to put it in the timeline and resave it as mpeg.

Also the uvs contentpack part 1 and 2.exe files that I believe you mention that I reinstall again ... well everytime I double click on any of the those two files the hourglass icon pops up for a few seconds but nothing happens.

No do not rename the file, I only suggested that if you had another copy you could then copy/paste to the installation directory - but you dont.

Regarding the problem you have installing the two content pack files.
Try the following.
Firstly you will need a copy of Winzip - the trial version will do - no need to purchase it.
With Winzip installed on your computer, if you now go to Windows Explorer and locate the content.exe files, right click and you will now see an option to unzip them.

This will then extract all of the files in the content pack.
once extracted you should see a file named setup.exe - try running this instead.

But there was two wmv files that wouldn't even convert or when I tried to insert them into Windows Movie Maker it told me that the file didn't exist or that it was corrupted.
Sorry but not much I can offer here - the indication is that those files are corrupted.

To see if your VideoStudio is in fact working properly you need to obtain some other wmv files - perhaps download some from the internet

:D well it seems Ulead is now working the way it should be.

I had Version 10 of Windows MediaPlayer and today I updated to version 11. The wmv videos that would freeze up in Ulead and wouldn't allow me to playback are now working great.

I played around with Ulead trying out different stuff in the project timeline and Ulead didn't freeze up on me.
I didn't think that having an older version of Windows Media Player would cause wmv files in ulead to not function right. But it seems *knock on wood* to have worked.

Thanks again for all the help :D
