Nothing really explains alot on options for burn

Post by wguru »

Sure the default tick for record to disc is great and that's all I really see MF explaining the very least about, ref. "Choose the disc burner and/or select the folder where you want to output video files or a disc image files.", it's the "and/or" that's not explained anywhere.

Could someone briefly explain the what fors surrounding "output video files or a disc image files".

What are people using the "disc image" (iso) files for, just VCD/SVCD's?

Seems I recall being able to burn a DVD from my backup iso file. but all I can google on iso files indicates they're used for burning to CD's. Am I confused and never did burn a DVD from an iso file? Or am I better off backing up DVD burns by "creating DVD folders" (.BUP, .IFO & .VOB's)?

I know users are supposed to add plop the vids into a given project file, but I think MF has issues with too many clips and chapters (maybe it's my other capturing program, KWorld's PVR/TVR). I've actually run into the program telling me too many clips (20 is the max I think).

To get around that issue, I simply joined clips enought o keep the clip count under the max. Also I'm thinking that haiving a lot of clips might be why I'm having failed burns and even MF freezing up just after the DVD disc starts burning.

I've taken to using the "test burn" feature and even backing up the capture by using Create DVD folders and disc image files.

ISO files are complete copies of CDs and DVDs. So when you create an ISO you can use any burning application to create your DVD from the ISO.

Creating DVD folders is like having an ISO file unpacked. MF creates the DVD structure, Video_TS and Audio_TS folders, that has the VOB, BUP, and IFO files for your DVD.

The benefit of "Burning to your Harddrive" (creating DVD folders) is that you can use a software DVD player on your PC to test your production before burning a disk. You can not do that with an ISO file.

AFAIK, there is no such 20 clip limit when creating a disk using DMF. The limit is imposed by duration/size of the video clips themselves. A single-layer disk can hold up to 4.7 gig (4.3 gig actual). So the total of all clips should not exceed that. This is controlled by the Bitrate of your video clips. The higher the bitrate, the better the quality, however you can not place as much video onto a disk. Lower bitrates, lower quality, more disk space.

DMF does allow for up to 99 chapters per title. A title is the video clip. So if you do have 20 clips and wanted to use 99 chapters with each of the 20 clips, you should be able to have a total of 1,980 chapters on your DVD.

Sorry I'm not familiar with your Kworld program, so I can't help there..

uses for iso files

Thank you for replying. Was pretty sure that Google search results on iso's, omits that iso files are also suitable for DVD vid captures. Was wondering if there was a good reason for it.
