Slide show images too wide for TV

Post by kcmoore »

hello,

a little background - i am creating a slide show of approx 300 slides using VS11+. The slide sources are either scanned in from old photos, or jpgs from my kodak c875 camera. in either case, the slides are stored on my HD and I have imported them to my Library.

The problem that I am having is when I burn a DVD and play it on my TV (which is not a widescreen and/or HD tv, as i'm not there mentally yet :D ) the images are too wide, some of the people at the left and right edges of the photos are cut off. When I watch it in preview mode on the PC, it looks fine (of course).

I thought it might have been related to the dimensions of the pictures. some of those were WAAYY to big. I used photoshop and resized them down to a 720 x 480 (NTSC) and thought that would fix it. No such luck. reburning a DVD-RW showed the pictures to have the same problem.

does anyone have any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong, or may need to check?

Thanks,

KC

Its the same with titles. Most TV sets have what is termed an overscan area so you lose a bit off the top, bottom and both sides.

This is why you see a guideline box when adding titles to your videos. Use those guidelines as an indication of how much of your photo will get chopped off.

yes, exceeding the "safe area" is what i do believe the problem to be. which is too bad. do you know of any way to reduce the "size" of the pictures? I have already reduced the resolution, but I don't think reducing it any further will make the pictures an smaller, just blurrier :)

thanks for your help.

It is best to prepare the pictures in an image editor such as PhotoImpact or Photoshop before placing them into VideoStudio. You can then crop them or increase the size of the canvas to allow for the overscan effect.
