If your camera is a mini DV digital camera, you should not be using USBbut Firewire. That is the only way to capture high quality DV format video in a straight transfer from the cassette in the camera. Anything else is not going to give you the quality. And if your laptop does not have a mini DV four pin port, then you need to explore the possibility of a PCMCIA or PCI Express card with Firewire on it for the computer -- that is if you don't have a desktop with Firewire. (And for those, Firewire cards are quite cheap these days.)

With mini DV cameras, USB is used normally for transferring still photos, normally via some other program, or at most, low quality streaming video if the camera has that facility.

Welcome to the forums,

What Samsung model camcorder do you have? Is it the DVD camcorder? What OS are you running on your Toshiba Laptop?

Looking at the Samsung site, a version of Ulead VS comes bundled with your camcorder, could you please specify the version? It's also going to have an SE on the end of the version number, e.g.; VideoStudio 9SE. If it is any version except VS11, AND you're attempting to use this on a Vista machine, it just will not work.

Samsung's FAQ on transferring video using USB and Ulead Software

If you have one of Samsung's MiniDV camcorders, then you should be using the Firewire to transfer your video, not USB.

Please elaborate a bit more, so we can help..;)

Then both our replies stand. Install Firewire if you don't have it...

I don't know the currency exchange across the pond..;), but you should not need to spend much for one. Firewire support is built into your OS (XP). There should not be a need to install any software for firewire to work.

Have you checked your computer manual to make absolutely sure it does not already have a mini-firewire port? I have tried to find the information from a Google search, but turned up no useful information. However, I know many of the Toshiba laptops do come with firewire, though certainly not all. My old Dell Inspiron 8000 did, as did my new HP Pavilion dv9203tx...

Otherwise, you will need to check whether your computer has a slot for PCMCIA cards. If so, check for a PCMCIA firewire card in a big computer shop.

I can't offer any suggestion for a particular model. I know I bought one several years ago for less than A$40 (around US$35) and prices are likely to have fallen since then. I have just pulled it out of a drawer and it does not have a brand name on it -- just a label saying "IEEE1394 to CardBus Interface PC Card" and it goes into a computer with a PCMCIA card slot.

But I think most newer laptops have replaced those slots with a (PCI) ExpressCard slot. My new HP, for instance, has one of these. And I would be very surprised if there were not a Firewire adapter card that would use such a slot.

For the sake of completeness, and to help others who might be in a similar situation, can you tell us what you did in the end...

Once again Thanks for everyone's help. I will describe all of my actions below, later

However, an unacceptable problem still exists. The firewire solution has been successful in enabling me to view / record video from my DV camera to my laptop hard drive. I could not perform this action prior to your kind assistance.

But on playback on my laptop, the video action 'Freezes', then goes 'Fast forward' in order to 'catch up'. (a bit like the keystone cops speed!!)

So, I re-sent the video from my video camera in 'Capture Mode' and noticed that the image on the software viewing panel 'froze' when receiving video data. The 'frozen' image coincides with the playback 'fast forwarding'.

Can you help ?

Sorry if my description of the symptoms is poor.

--------------------------------

In order to solve my original problem, I purchased:-

1 x PCMCIA Firewire 2 port IEEE1394 Laptop Expansion Card

and

1 x FIREWIRE CABLE CONVERTER 4 TO 6 PIN ADAPTOR FEMALE MALE

(Try Amazon for the above hardware)

Still not sure how to solve this latest problem though

Regards
