Is this too much work for my PC? (restarts automatically)

Post by masterworld »

Since I bought a new CPU (Core 2 duo ¡V more powerful that the old one, a PentiumIV), every time I try to create a NTSC mpeg2 video file (specially when using a simple-10-minute .dat archive); when rendering it, my system becomes unstable¡Kand sometimes it automatically restarts, but before, it shows warnings like this:

Maybe my graphic Card would not be enough for such work?
To take a look at it, please follow link:

Thanks in advance!
pd: I tried reinstalling/updating the graphic driver but was useless...
I use video studio 7, OS is Windows XP professional

Can you just clarify how you came to be using a .DAT file for video work?
What was the source of the original footage?
Post that data first.
There will be many more questions to come!

well, first, I explored a VCD, then I got in to the MPEGAV folder.
there, I found a DAT file named AVSEQ01
I took a copy of it, and then pasted it in to a folder in D (hard disk)
next step, I changed the extension format from .DAT to .MPEG (as well as changing the name of the file)

The system still recognizes that file as a .DAT type file (when looking at it in "properties" mode), but it can be viewed in windows media player and others video/audio applications too.
I found this trick (not sure if it¡¬s really a trick-but works for sure) on the internet.
:)
thanks!

I'm not really sure why it is doing that but I think the clue is that windows is still recognizing the file as DAT. Yes, on VCD's there are DAT files which I forgot and for the purposes of playback I am sure it's fine.
Anyway, it must be an MPEG1 file if it came from a VCD.
Why don't you try downloading a free program called SUPER. You can use that to convert the file to a standard MPEG1 then VS should have no problem with it.
Here's the link: http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Hi and thank you a lot for your help... :D
I¡¬ve seen this problem may not be necessary caused by using .DAT files....since it appears when I render any big project (10minutes and up), using .DAT files or not...
hope I¡¬m wrong (if so, it would be a more complex problem)

When rendering a very little project (2-3 minutes), it seems that my system can support that and finishes the work with no issues.

I¡¬m starting to think it may be my graphic card (it¡¬s intel and it¡¬s new!)...what do you think?
Anyway I¡¬ll try one more time using a 10min-normal-mpeg2 file...just to be sure...

One thing strikes me as a bit weird. One of the error messages is not related to VideoStudio, but rather \lg_fwupdate\getodd.exe. Whatever that is. Could it be a conflict between VS and this program? Perhaps this other program doesn't like to be "robbed" of most of the CPU power for an extended period of time? Just a guess.

Anyway, if it somehow is related to the massive processing power used, you could try to start encoding a long video, and then reduce VideoStudios priority one notch in the task manager.

finally this is the classic error message I cound¡¬t catch before:
(Caught when trying to render a big project some minutes ago (my last try: a 90 minutes AVI movie)

I can say that, to this moment, I¡¬ve tried too many things with no results...(I have even uninstalled \lg_fwupdate\getodd.exe and some other components that may interfere with VS - I have too many things installed... ).

my next step is trying to do a system restore (tomorrow) to some days back in time (unless anybody has a good suggestion)...
...I remember that one week ago, I made a 5 min clip (can¡¬t remember what extension I gave it), with none of these problems.
Any news, I¡¬ll keep you informed
thanks

Just out of curiosity are your Hard drives FAT32 or NTFS.
Are you rendering to uncompressed avi.

If so uncompressed avi gobbles up 65GB of hard drive per hour.
FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB so it is possible you have a combination of these two items.

Regarding your method of importing files of a VCD or SVCD you cannot do it by simply naming them .mpg you need to use a conversion program.
Either check our links to FREE stuff or do a Google search.

Just noticed the file name on your time line. Where on earth did you get that from?

I would,as the very next step, before I do anything else, remove all these special characters from the file name and try again.

Right click on the file in your time line and check the properties also. Since you seem to know how to that, post the properties here.

I¡¬m taking my CPU to a technician tomorrow...It seems a graphic card failure (or even a VIRUS...)
I¡¬ve realized the problems are not only with VS, but with some other applications as well...
any news I¡¬ll keep you in contact.
cheers :)

Had a strong Virus running
That was the reason of the weak/bad performance
I formatted my PC and reinstalled everything
after that I tried to render, and everything was OK again!!!

thanks for all your help!

PD: about what heinz-oz said: "Just noticed the file name on your time line. Where on earth did you get that from?"...
that name was not intentional
I got it from emule (is a movie: return of the living death part 5)
sometimes in emule, all files comes with very extense/rare names
Do you know what on earth is emule, mr heinz-oz?...
