Side Toolbar and selection questions

This is not a big problem, but it is annoying to me that every time I open a tool on the left (for example, the eraser tool), the right sidebar pops open, covering what ever I'm working on. Is there any setting to keep this from happening? It's a very trivial matter, so I can deal with it, but if I can keep the side bar from opening, I would love to fix it. Any ideas? I only want a tool bar to open when I click on it, not when it thinks I need it.

Here's another question. When I enlarge a selected object, it would be nice if the selected item would go to the center of the workspace. After I zoom in to 100% size, I have to scroll around to look for the object that I have selected. Is there a setting for this as well? I've looked in preferences, but I could have missed it.
