unable to capture the video from the sony camcorder

Post by mallikar »

I am perceiving the following message, when I am trying to capture the video from sony camcorder using 1394 card.

Error message: Either no video capture driver is installed in this system or no device is connected.

My thoughts:
1. This cam corder worked last week and all of sudden not working.
2. I have confirmed the 1394 interface card with another sony cam corder (different model) today and found 1394 card is working fine.
3. I am suspecting the dv port on the camcorder.
4. The OS is winxp and the dv software is ulead video studio 11 plus.

My question is...
1. how to troubleshoot the camcorder i.e. how to confirm that the dv port on the sony camcorder is working or not?

Thanks & Regards

Can you tell us exactly which model your Sony is, please, and whether it is a mini DV camera or a Digital 8. VS 11 appears to have difficulty capturing from the latter when it is playing an analogue 8mm tape. (I know this from personal experience, but others have confirmed similar problems when trying to capture analogue tapes using a mini DV camera as passthrough...)

Windows XP has "Windows Movie Maker" built in. Try checking the camcorder with that.

Thanks for your responses. The model of the camcorder is DCR-TRV70. It's minidv tape video.

Also tried using another laptop and the trouble symptoms are same as mentioned earlier.

Error message: Either no video capture driver is installed in this system or no device is connected.

I haven't tried using windows movie maker. I am going to try this software tonight.

Next thing to check is the Firewire cable and then after that inspect the camcorders firewire port for damage in case someone tried to push it in the wrong way round (easily happens - done so myself a few times)

Mallikar. The exact same problem I am having (See my post on the same day as yours - "missing drivers"). I too had no problems capturing from my Sony DV (DCR HC20E) until a few weeks ago.

Heinz-oz, sjj1805 and black lab all made suggestions along the lines of making sure the capture card is connected correctly and detected, and checking that the cable and camera port is undamaged (thanks guys).

All these things seem OK.
- The IEEE 1394 card is listed in my device manager, and indicates all OK when I trouble shoot.
- System Properties/Hardware indicates I have the proper drivers.
- The camera port is OK as I checked by transfering to my DVD recorded with another firewire.
- I tried MS Movie Maker to capture and that software too couldn't detect a camera.

Unfortunately I don't have access to another camera to try.

I'd love to know if you find a solution!!

nunawj,
When you plug the firwire port into the computer your camcorder should be off, connect first then turn the cam on. If hot plugging the cam in can damage the firewire port.

I remember back months ago a similar issue and the problem was the pins in the camcorder were either pushed back into the cam just enough where it couldn't make a connection or it was the cables pins were very short ( I believe it was the camcorders 1394 pins ).
Maybe you want to check these small pin connectors on the 1394 port.
The firewire port could also have failed. They aren't hot plugable like usb is.
