HD-DVD on DVD+RW will not play on Toshiba HD-DVD HDE1. PC OK

Post by dhnj »

I have created a HD-DVD with HDV footage on a DVD+RW (Book Type DVD-ROM) with MF6P. The DVD+RW plays perfectly on the PC with Power
DVD 7 Ultra, but cannot be played on a Toshiba HD-DVD player model HDE1 (PAL Version). The error message from the Toshiba HD-DVD player says "This disc cannot be played". The disc contains a HVDVD_TS
structure.

Not at all.
What I would like not know is the correct workflow
needed to make a HD-DVD on a DVD that can be played
back on a Toshiba HD-DVD Player.

Try DVD-R, I don't believe it's possible to make a DVD+RW disc Bootktype marked as DVD-ROM. Never worked for me. DVD+R's worked marked Booktype=DVD-ROM.
I can use DVD+R and set the booktype to DVD-ROM and the dvd's play in almost all dvd players which normally do not play DVD+R dvd's.
Sounds like your HD-DVD player doesn't support DVD+RW dvd's.
The computer does of course and that's why they play in the computer.

The users manual does not list DVD+RW as a supported media for the Toshiba.

DVD+RW with Book Type set as DVD-ROM has always worked with me.
According to www.avsforum.com I can confirm this too as follows:

If you use Ulead Movie Factory 6, the need for Nero goes away altogether.

Anyway, I burn on DVD+RW rewritable media all the time with book type bitsetting set to DVD-ROM, and HD-DVDs made this way have played in the A1 and A2 models.

Has any one tried a Toshiba HD-DVD Player Model E1 which seems to be the problem

Interesting, I change the "Booktype" using Nero. It's one of the other reasons I use Nero to burn dvd's, besides the fact that nero always works and has a verify feature.
I've never seen an option when burning dvd's in any MF version that allows one to set the Booktype. Some burners have a utility program to run which will change the booktype of the media in the drive, after running the utility I've used MF6 to burn DVD+R that ended up with a Booktype of DVD-ROM.
Is this how you are changing the booktype? Because I'm not aware of any other method to change boottype in any versions of MF.

You are correct that you cannot change the Book Type in MF.
The Book Type must be set before burning via a burner utility or
CDSpeed (Nero Toolkit Directory) in case of Nero6. As a matter of interest some burners do not allow you to change Book Type with DVD+RW media.

Thanks for the tip in Nero (CDspeed).
In Nero I've been selecting the burner, then clicking on the options dropdown box to change the booktype on my burners that do support this feature. Works great on my DVD+R dvd's to make them compatible with my older panasonic players.

A little over a year ago, I burned an HD-DVD to DVD+RW disc (booktype set to DVD-ROM), and was able to play it in the Toshiba HD-DVD unit (it was one of the earliest HD-DVD players at that time -- I took the disc to Bestbuy, and they let me play it). I haven't tried it with the E1 version though...

George
