HELP: PIXL crashes after re-install

Post by MaureenO »

Hello, I have PIXL and I've used it since it came out, however I recently had a Hard Drive crash and had a new HD installed. Upon re-installing PIXL, I find it crashes routinely; crashes when I open up a second image to create layers with.....I cannot have two windows open and there is no error message--only that PI has to close and I may lose my data then it crashes.

My old OS was XP SP1 and the new OS is SP2.

Is there a fix somewhere for this?

Thank you,
Maureen

Hi Maureen, welcome to the forum.

You may have a faulty installation. Do you have the boxed or a downloaded version? A boxed one (Installation CD) may give you the opportunity to do a repair installation.

How exactly did you install it on your new drive?

Have you set up your virtual memory or is it still on Win XP default settings?

Thank you, sir, for such a prompt response!

I have the boxed version with the Installation CD. In my old HD I was running XP Service Pack 1 and in this new HD, I have SP2 and have wondered if that might make a difference.

I have not adjusted my Virtual memory and never knew I had one (except the one in my skull which works fairly well, so far), so I have to say I am still set at WinXP Default settings. Have you an idea how I would adjust that then?

As for the installation, I slipped in the disk and ran the standard (not custom) installation.

If you've any hints up your sleeve as to how I might make those adjustments and repairs, I'd be quite grateful to you!

Thank you,
Maureen

Now there is a spot of bother. I have never actually used PI XL much at all even though I own a copy of it. From other users here I know that PI XL tended to be a bit temperamental. It works for some but not all users. It seems to be a bit sensitive to certain hardware/software combinations.

As a first resort I would make sure that the virtual memory settings and the temp file locations are set in PI preferences. That's where the "bother" bit comes in. Ulead have constantly changed menu content and locations with various versions. I don't have PI XL installed nowhere and, hence, have to guess where everything might be. If you can't find a setting where I tell you it should be, try to locate something similarly named and/or in a different location.

The first step is the virtual memory in XP. Go to "Control Panel" >"System" >"Advanced" and in "Performance" select "Settings" and then the "Advanced" tab again. In "Virtual Memory" click "Change" and set the size to 2.5 times your physical RAM by selecting the radio button for "Custom size". Set both, minimum and maximum settings to the same amount. Click on "Set" when you are done.

I hope you know how much RAM you have. If not, you can find that at the beginning of this procedure when you click on "System" in the control panel. The first page, "General" tab will show you the physical RAM at the bottom right hand corner.

You may have to reboot your system after this.

Create a folder in Win explorer and call it something like PI temp.

After this, start up PI and select "Preferences" from the file menu. Navigate to the System branch and point PI to this newly created folder as a location for the 2. "Define additional folders for virtual memory"

Give it a try and let us know how you fared.

Thank you for your help, sir, and I followed your instructions. I am now happily becoming accustomed to my PI 12 version instead.

The only things I did not do is try the "repair" for the XL version and uninstall/reinstall. I was afraid to muddy the waters of Version 12.

I have abandoned the XL version in favour of Version 12 and will soon become used to that interface.

Thank you!
