VS9 Freezes during playback of movie

Post by Marke »

Hi all
First post so be gentle if question has been asked before. (i did spend 30minutes searching first)

i have been using VS for about 4 years now and use it to create football dvds for people. I am currently in the middle of a couple of movies and all of a sudden VS starts playing up. Incedently i made a movie last night with no problems what so ever.
Tonight i starts to build the movie get to the end where i add a highlights package to music. 2 clips were added and transitions were put in place. I then added a song ive used 100's of times and press play to check the project so far. The hour glass comes up as it normally does before playing and then nothing for 5 minutes. Ctrl, Alt,Del to close and all is good. Restart program same problem.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled ulead 9 but didnt fix the problem.
I remeber this happening a while ago and i was due for a format of the Pc so did that and all was good.

Any ideas please.

Are you saying everything was fine until you inserted the audio file? What happens if you remove the audio file?

Same deal. I have even tried copying the file to my movie drive just in case. I have removed the music and all is still the same, still freezes.
Since my post last night i have used vs9 to make another movie i compiled earlier. So im guessing its something in the build of the movie other than vs now.

At least i am not that far into it and it may be easier to start again on this project and test it as i build it.

You've probably got one or more corrupt video clips. (A corrupt video file will often play fine, but cause trouble when you try to edit or convert it.)

What format are your source videos? The more compressed formats seem to be the most prone to cause problems. (If your files are MPEG, there are a couple of programs that might be able to fix them.)

Another possibility is that your audio file is either corrupt or now in a format which causes VS some problems. Be aware that some versions of MP3 audio, particularly those produced with the LameMP3 codec, do not work with Video Studio. Convert them to the standard .wav format and the problem usually goes away.

As stated before i have used the music file many times with no problems at all with the file i use. My guess is a dodgy video clip somewhere. Ill rebuild it tonight and test more regularly this time.

Your system could also simply be running out of disk space. How much free space do you have on your system drive? Where do you keep the temp and preview files? Do you ever delete these when your projects finish? When did you defrag your drives the last time? etc. etc. etc.

My stepdaughter has an old car. She loves it. has been driving it to pickup/drop off the kids at school for years with no problem at all. The other day it wouldn't start. Do you know why?

I'll tell you. The petrol gauge was faulty and she ran out of gas even though the gauge told her it was still half full

Well gents thanks for all your advice. As stated before i have been using vs for 4 years so that would put me clearly in the know the program catagory. Defrag, seperate partitions, temp file locations etc are all as they have been for a while with no dramas.
Why the post in the first place? Im in the middle of 6 full Rugby League Games this week. Woprking out on average that i film 2 games a week for the last 4 seasons about 22 games a season i have over 150 movies to my credit using VS.

Anyway an update, I rebuilt the movie again last night checking the playback function as i inserted a clip, transition or audio. All went fine without leaving out a single clip or audio file from the first attempt?!?! As i said before this has happened before. The only thing i can see different this time round is my slug video. The first time i had it at 10.22sec when it is usually 12.00 seconds. I also changed the order of the clips of the highlights at the end without leaving a clip out. This is where the problems were in the first build. 2 clips into the highlights with audio backing.
Anyway thanks and looks like ill hang around for a bit and see if i can help out and learn some new tricks
