Lock Up During Capture VS7.01

Post by lweese »

I'm new to this forum and this software. I have only created one DVD to date, however, I have been plagued by VS7.01 locking up during a prolonged capture (with "Split by Scene" enabled). Is this a MS XP issue or a VS issue?

I have a rather puny hard drive (37GB) so I installed a 128GB external via firewire. I am capturing to that external drive and have the preview preferences directed to that drive as well.

Any help would be great, I'm terribly frustrated!

How are you capturing? If it's DV AVI through FireWire, then the embedded timecode is used to detect scenes, which doesn't require much CPU attention at all -- the computer is essentially only writing incoming data to disk.

Try to provide more details of what you are doing.

I am doing just that DV -> AVI using firewire

Settings:
Source: Panasonic
Format: DV
Check Split by Screen
Capture folder: <My external drive>
Options: Check Capture to Library, DV type-2

The only other setting I have altered in the preferences is to set the preview files for my external drive. I had initially assumed the lock up was due to insufficient disk space.

If I babysit the capture and stop capture every 5 minutes or so I can work around it (although it still will lock up after 30 minutes or so of use). I'm beginning to wonder if this is a MS problem. Once lock up occurs the directory VS was writing to is corrupt and windows will lock up if I try to open the folder. I have to delete the folder and restart the whole process.
My PC OS is MS XP.

If your computer only has a small hard disk, I assume it otherwise does not have much in the way of resources, particularly a fast CPU and possibly RAM. If this is indeed the case, then you are probably doing yourself a disservice by capturing DV/AVI using the Type 2 encoder which is relatively resource-consuming. People with less powerful computers who use Type 2 often run into a range of problems. Try capturing using Type 1 and see if that solves your problem (you can change the Type by clicking on the Options cog wheel icon on the middle left hand of the Capture screen.)
