DVDWS Menu Challenge - Inverse Selection

Post by GeorgeW »

In a recent post, Steve and I were discussing a Firemenu, and whether or not it can be done in DVDWS 2.x. For anyone curious, below is a sample of what's known as the Inverse Selection trick for DVD Menus.

Notice that the "selected" buttons are "full-motion" and can also be full-color (I only have the fire color in my example).

I would be interested if anyone has a method to duplicate this menu in DVDWS 2.x

This is ~10mb, and the link is active for about 7 days:

It was working earlier, but now it's broken :(

Here's a different link to the same file:

I'm probably wide off the mark here but it's not difficult to simulate the 'highlighted image' with a motion button and just see the one button per selection.

I've done it with a motion button so I assume you could replace that with an animated gif of your own choice. Maybe not enough colours for the gif but again I do not see why you could not put a full motion button to replace that.

The idea is to have full-motion buttons only appear when navigating the different selections on a menu. When they are not "selected", they are invisible, and only when they are "selected" do they appear.

Ok.

You have probably done this (and it's not a perfect simulation)

Strange tho, mouse-over works DWS but not the comiled project. Only up/down.

All source files incuded.

(BTW pardon my ignorance. Ulead use 'ufo' for it's file extensions but I cannot read the objects in a file viewer)

What you have done is known as the "Switched Menus" technique (which is basically a "Scene Selection" Menu in the current versions of MovieFactory and VideoStudio's Disc Creation Module).

The major differences are:
-the mouse over doesn't work with Switched Menus
-there is a slight pause/delay as you move between menu buttons
-the background audio resets after change of menu button

You need to use PhotoImpact to read the UFO files - they are specific to Ulead. If you don't have a copy then download the 30 day free trial.
They cannot be opened with any other image editing software.

Thanks for the info. I will take a look at the s/w when I have a little time.

Well I knew that my 'solution' was a compromise and a perfect result can only work with fully active buttons on one menu.

Back to the drawing board then.

It was a very good try, and your solution does use "Advanced" techniques :)

For those interested in "Switched Menus", there is a Tutorial here titled "Roll-over" Effects using Auto-Activating Buttons

Just downloaded your zip file.
That was a very good attempt - although not perfect due to the slight pause/delay as you move between menu buttons - nevertheless a good try.
