Jittery HDV playback/editing in 24p

Really!??!

You guys are going to kill me because I'm so clueless so PLEASE pardon my ignorance.

I filmed using 720P/24P. Currently while I am capturing footage to my pc the output setting (a physical switch) on the JVC is set to HDV. I also see in the camera where there is a setting to change the output type.

Are you saying that I can change a setting in the camera menu and change the physical switch to DV and that will allow me to output DV even if I shot using 720P/24P?

If that is the case then that would be awesome because (as you stated above) I can hold on to the HD tapes until this whole bleeding edge business goes by the wayside. Would also save me from investing even more money on an editor that can handle HDV with my camera.

I'm at work now so I'll give it a try when I get home.

Yup, I think any HDV/DV camera can downconvert at the firewire port.
True enough, the 110U can also, here is the FAQ page:
http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/faq. ... =13#dv1394
(I don't know the full procedure re switches/menus, check the manual... on my Canon it's a menu setup change. You may only need to change the switch.)
It also described the slight quality loss from HDV-DV-DVD conversion vs HDV-DVD (mostly color res). I'd think it's still better quality than starting with DV to begin with, just not as nice as could be from HDV to start.

Note, article recommends changing switch and connecting firewire w/ camera OFF:
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=64873
(That forum is for the JVC proHD cameras incl 100series, look/ask there for more info .)

Normally cameras handle 24p by embedding it in a 60i stream, then you apply pulldown which sucks out the 2 progressive for every 3 frames etc, but your pro camera may do it straight 24p... don't know, check the manual, especially when downconverting.

Nice! I just looked over all the links. Unbelievable amount of info. Man I feel stupid with someone else schooling me on a camera that I own! :) I guess you have to learn somehow. :) Thank you so much for the help. Your really helping me get out of a tough spot here.

OK now quick question. I read the spec and here is the statement that is made.
JVC recommends finishing in original native high definition, thereby preserving maximum image quality. Once completed, an HD project is easily output in SD for final release.
Now does this mean capturing HDV footage via your cam and down converting "using the cam" to your pc then editing DV? Or do they mean capturing HDV footage, editing HDV footage and at the very last step down converting using your PC to create your final DVD product?

They mean the latter... do capture/edit in HDV on PC all the way through, then as final step render/output an SD-DVD MPEG file to create the DVD.
The former is the workaround if you can't edit/capture in HDV well enough :)

glad to help, that's what I read all these forums for, lots of smart tips & experience out there to share! good luck & keep trying.
