Capture driver issue or something else?

Post by BumpSkillz »

Hi everyone. I just bought a Canon HV20 and a Dynex DX-FC202 Firewire adapter for my laptop (got it at Best Buy). The Dynex card is plug-and-play so XP installs it with no problem as "VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller". So it recognizes it. When I plug my HV20 into the Firewire port, Windows XP sees it as the HV20 but it doesn't show up in the device manager after Windows says it's installed. Either way, the camcorder itself shows that it is plugged into a computer and seemingly ready for video transfer.

So... I open VideoStudio 11 and click over to "Capture" and it tells me: "Either no video capture driver is installed in this system, or no device is connected." I then clicked on "Tools" and then "Capture Plug-In" just to see what that says and it says: "IVI Capture Component".

My question then is: Does this seem to be software issue, a capture driver issue, a camcorder issue, or is it the Firewire adapter? I hope the info I provided can help someone to help me.

Please click here --> Image so that we can then view your system specifications.

Firstly turn your camcorder OFF and VideoStudio closed.
Now open VideoStudio and go to the capture Tab.
Now turn ON your camcorder in PLAYBACK mode.

Does a dialog box now appear letting you know that a new device has been detected?

I take it that the Dynex is either a PCMCIA or PCI Express card. My own experience with such cards has been mixed. I have a Firewire PCMCIA card in one of my laptops. It only seems to work when the camera I connect to it has its own external power supply (i.e. the mains adaptor) plugged in. The Firewire card is only 4 pin, so carries no power supply of its own.

So if you haven't already, try capturing with your camera connected also to its mains adaptor.
