Can't capture from DVD in VS11

Post by cliffj »

When I click on "capture from DVD" I am asked to select the source drive from a list, but there is nothing listed in the window to select from, or any way to type in the name of the drive. Any idea what the problem might be? (I'm running on Vista). Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi,

About finalizing your disc, this option is usually found on the burning stage (if the software allows you to toggle this option). You only leave a burning session "open" for multi-session discs which the DVD-Video format do not support.

Just check the finalize burning option when you see it.

Hope this could help. =)

ABout your problem.. Is VS the only software that doesn't detect your optical drive? I mean do windows detect your optical drive?

cliffj -- I have VS11+ running on Vista Home Premium. When I select either (from the Capture page) "Import from DVD/DVD-VR" or else, simply right clicking on either the library pane or the timeline and choosing 'Insert DVD/DVD-VR", the window that comes up shows my DVD burner drive. I have a choice of either 'Import DVD Folder' or just 'Import'. The first allows me to transfer all the contents of the DVD to my computer. The second brings up a window (after a brief process of 'parsing contents' of the disc) which contains a directory tree of the disc, and allowing me to select parts of it I might want.

If you have the downloaded, full version, did you install both the main (first) file and the Extra Content (second) file? Do other programs 'see' your optical drive(s)?

Thanks for the response. The bonus and extra content packs were installed when I downloaded and installed the full version of VS 11+. For some reason the program doesn't see my optical drives, even though they work fine on all other programs. Here's what happens: When I click on "Import from DVD?DVD-VR" I get a window that asks me to "select a DVD drive with a DVD title" When I click on the down arrow to select from a list of drives, the drop-down appears but is completely blank. No drives are listed to select from. Could it have anything to do with Vista?

It shouldn't be a Vista thing. As I say, I run VS11+ with Vista Home Premium and it has no difficulties seeing my DVD burner.

Do you have any packet writing software on your computer: that is the sort of software where you can drag and drop files on the burner icon for burning later? There are a variety of programs, including the InCD module of Nero and a similar one in Roxio ("Drag-to-Disc"??), and many of them conflict with Video Studio by refusing it access to the burner. With previous versions, though, I don't recall this affecting access for import purposes; only for actual burning...

Ken, I did have Roxio installed, and your suggestion sounded like a strong possibility, so I uninstalled it to test whether that might be the problem. But no luck. VS still won't see any of my drives when I try to capture from DVD. It's a mystery. Maybe I'll just have to live with it, but I do appreciate all your thoughts. Cliff

Just to close this issue out, I finally got the problem solved today. It turned out to be a glitch with the factory installation of the two burner drives on my new Dell computer. After considerable time on the phone with Dell tech support -- including uninstalling and reinstalling drivers for both burners -- the drives were fixed. I then uninstalled and reinstalled VS 11 and I am now able to use the "capture from dvd" function without a problem.
