Saving "Versions" of Clips

Post by astrovideo »

Hi,
I am confused about video clips / thumbnails in the library. If I drag a clip onto the timeline, and then alter it a bit (the brightness, speed or length for example), and then close VS, is that clip now altered the next time I open VS?

It seems that sometimes I am changing the clip for good, and sometimes not. What if I want to save a version of the clip without changing the original one? What if I DO want to change the original one?

Also, am I correct in assuming that the actual underlying file that the clip/thumbnail represents is never altered - even if I tweak the clip/thumbnail?

Thanks for setting me straight.

If you drag a clip from the library to the timeline and edit it, then save that project (a vsp), that editing will be retained when you re-open the project. The thumbnail clip will remain unchanged.

If you drag a clip from the library to the timeline and edit it, then go to Clip > Save Trimmed Video, it will put a new thumbnail in the library representing your edited clip. This is a "virtual" clip and the original clip is not altered.

Thank you for the reply. One thing I don't understand though. I have a clip with which I was paying around with color correction. I never made a project (vsp) out of it. Now, when I open VS, the color correction sliders for that clip remained where I left them. What would cause this? It's not necessarily a bad thing - it would be helpful at times to have this, but not when it is not wanted.

Thanks again.
