I have been using the VideoStudio 8 SE (included with an st-lab firewire board) to capture a video from a DVCAM linked via firewire.
When I select the WMV Format and start the recording all it's fine, but when I do the Batch Capture with the same configuration I receive a message saying the Batch has failed.
If I use the DV or AVI or MPEG Format both the manual or batch capture work properly.
That looks very strange, they are supposed to do the same thing, the former start the capture manually, the latter do it automatically, I don't understand the difference, it shouldn't be tied to the Format in use.
Thanks.

It most certainly does matter what format you capture to - if you capture as DV (.avi) then you are simply transferring the video from your camcorder to the PC with no conversion.
Capturing to Mpeg means not only transferring but converting at the same time and if you can do that you are very lucky and should be satisfied with that.
Capturing to .wmv now not only has to transfer and convert but has to apply very heavy compression at the same time - your computer cannot cope - it is not a fault of VideoStudio - you are just expecting to much from your computer.
There is no sensible reason why you should want to capture as .wmv anyrate - it is extremely unsatisfactory for editing - mpeg is bad enough
If you want to end up with a .wmv file then capture as .avi (or at the very least mpeg) do all your editing and then convert the final product to .wmv as the very last stage of your work flow.

We can't tell you why Video Studio works the way it it does... This is a user-to-user forum. We are not Ulead employees...
We can often help with "best practices", and we can share what we've learned from experience.
We try to recommend the most foolproof way of doing things. Of course, you are free to deviate from what we recommend if it works for you. Depending on your hardware, your audio/video file formats, and your project goals, you may need to find your own procedure that works for you.

Not knowing how long the segments are that you capture manually and how much you capture in batch mode makes it a bit difficult to advice. When capturing via firewire and converting/compressing on the fly any PC will start to choke on the amount of data arriving via the firewire port. For that reason, depending on the overall power of your machine this will happen sooner or later, the PC will stop to empty the filled up buffer. That stuffs up your capture because the PC cannot stop your camcorder due to the format used. Only with DV-AVI do you have the device control functioning as it should.
