I'm looking at several products to edit my SOny DVD404 DVDS.
ULead is pretty good except that it appears that rendering MPEG2 introduces significant fuziness to the image.
If a clip is not rerendered the lines are sharp.
Once a video efect is added the sharpness dissapears.
Of course I use it to burn to DVD.
I would stay away from video effects but I want to use auto balance, auto..., de snow: All the video filters that are supposed to increase the sharpness and clarity.
And of course I match the project settings with renderer so already rendered in MPEG2 clips are not rerendered.
Anything I can do to eliminate the fuzzy outlines?
I can post 2 captures with video not -rerendered and with the same frame after appying an auto color filter and the differences are big.
Thank you,
Adrian

It sounds as though you are on the right track with property settings etc. except I do not see anywhere a reference to checking the field order - if you are transferring videos from your camcorder DVD you should be using "Upper Field First" (the default for VideoStudio is generally Lower Field First) and should be checking at every stage that you are still using Upper field first - changing field order is one cause of "fuzzines' while processing a video.

Hi Brian,
You are right, my Camcorder produces Upper Field first and the ULead default is Lower Field first. I have modifiedthe preferences to be Upper Field first. I also make sure that I export with Same As FirstVideo clip.
My issue still remains:
A clip with no video filtera applied is very sharp (it shows in green in the MPeg Optimizer)
A vido clip that I added a Video FIlter like Auto Exposure becomess fuzzy. (It also shown red in the MPEG optimizer denoting that it was rerendered).
I'm sure you are experiencing the same issue and I was wondering if there is any other processing that Ican do.
I tried that in Elements and I can fix that by setting an interlace frames on as clip attributes.

Whenever you apply an effect, the MPEG has to be de-compressed in order for the effect to be applied. Then it has to be re-compressed. In that case, you can't avoid re-rendering. And since MPEG is lossy compression, the picture is degraded with the 2nd compression step.I would stay away from video effects but I want to use auto balance, auto..., de snow: All the video filters that are supposed to increase the sharpness and clarity.

This is the main downside to a DVD camcorder. Any editing other than simple cutting & splicing requires the video to be decoded first. If you use Smart Render, the video will only be decoded and re-rendered where required (i.e during a transition, or where overlay text is applied, when videos with different properties are combined, etc.). However, SmartRender can sometimes introduce it's own set of problems.
And, then there are the other, not so easily explained, weird problems that sometimes happen when editing MPEGs... But, let's hope that you never have any of those issues....
