MF4 will not burn DVD

THANKS John! Without your comments I would have never noticed the down-arrow in order to generate the folders/files; indeed I got this to work by then burning via Nero.

Wow, for my taste this is too much hard work in order to coax a $100 piece of software to do its job! Thus I decided to get my money back, especially as I had only purchased MF4 7-to-10 days before. I’ll share these experiences to reciprocate with others who have so kindly contributed to this discussion thread.

I called Tech Support (310-896-6391); after 15 minutes (toll call) of listening to “elevator music” I hung up. Then I called Customer Service (877-226-6766). In 9 minutes I got a human who said he would do a “quick check” of the disc-writing problem; thinking he had disappeared on me, he came back 6 minutes later. He acknowledged the product developers were aware of the problem, but still working on a fix. In the conversation earlier I had made it clear that Tech Support didn’t answer the phone, there is no patch/fix posted on the website and that this forum was buzzing about the difficulties of writing onto a DVD. Wow, he most willingly offered to credit my MasterCard; within minutes I had an email with a form to be faxed, plus mailing the original, asserting/certifying that I had destroyed the product copy. I’ll give ULead credit for this, as I wouldn’t mind paying the price if the darn thing worked. (MF3 worked great for me as a trial, but for my needs they screwed up when going to MF4.)

For less than half price I am now looking at www.pinnaclesys.com; while I’m a newbie, a friend has described Instant Copy to have a lot more horsepower than MF4. I sent them a product inquiry during Easter weekend and got an immediate answer on Monday. For my needs (mpeg2 to VIDEO_TS) it may be that their Expression product may be better suited, thus I have sent a follow-up inquiry. If anyone knows about this I would certainly appreciate guidance.

Thanks,

Tom

I initially had some crashing issues with MF4, but they went away after I uninstalled and reinstalled. I have not experienced the burning issues, as I always create the Video files first so I can test before burning. As far as Pinnacle products, I would not go there is I were you. With the exception of Clean, I have never, ever, ever gotten a Pinnacle product to work properly. While I have had occasional issues with Ulead products, they have worked for me 95% of the time since I first used Media Studio Pro 2 back in 1995.

I am not a newbie as I have been authoring DVDs for quite some time now. After installing MF4 on a clean installation of Windows XP Pro, I had the program come to a sudden hault just as it was ready to burn the disk and the system completely crashed. There should not have been any reason for this to occur, but what I did recall is that MF4 now comes with it's own packet writing component, Data Add. Realizing that this could conflict with the other packet writing software, I uninstalled Data Add and subsequently rebooted. When I went to create the disk once again, it burned flawlessly. I have now burned five disks. I would suggest removing the Data Add comonent in order to see if the problem still exists.

Burning issues ( such as, I can't burn a disk)

Post by qsprocket »

Scotty...

How does one remove the Packet Writing add-on - as a modification in the install? Is it easiest to go to the control panel to modify the application - or should I uninstall and do a clean install?

That solution makes sense to me.

Thanks for the post.

qsprocket,

I would just remove it through the control panel first. If that does not work, then I would do a clean 'Modified' installation.

Hey all,

I finally got a reply from Tech support via email after one week and all they said was do a full unistallation and re-install but unfortuately that didn't work.

I also found that once i have messed around and finally burnt a disc the picture quality is not good enough. The picture is actually very clear but any fast movement and it goes blurry, it hurts your eyes to watch. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it??

One other thing, if on the burn page of the process if you select burn to DVD folder as well as burn to disc at the same time it actually does both yet try burn to disc on its own and the "burner busy for another application" comes up-This is getting annoying!!

Giving up un DVD MF4...

Post by rodrigt »

Hi Guys,

I'm giving up on Ulead's DVD MF4... MF3 trial version worked flawlessly for me (mpeg2 to VIDEO_TS)... but for that application MF4 is an abortion... plagued with "disc busy" messages... and the work arrounds have only worked for me sometimes... perhaps if I tried harder I could figure this damn thing out... but for a $100 piece of useless software I've given up! I'm currently going through the process of submitting my "Letter of Destruction", in order to get my money back.

In appreciation to those who have contributed to this thread, below is my dialog with Ulead's customer service. MF3 worked fine for my application, but Ulead royally screwed it up while going to MF4... who knows, perhaps some day I will re-purchase MFX... in the mean time, shame un Ulead for selling crap that doesn't work.

I'll continue to lurk on this forum for a while.... Cheers,

Tom

Hola Juan Carlos,

Ulead Tech Support wrote:

>Do you have Nero InCD or Roxio DirectCD/Drag to Disc installed?

The Nero software I have on my 5-month-old power-machine is Nero Express and Nero Smart Start... those are some of the options that show when (in Win XP-Home/SP2) I click on All Programs & then click on Nero. On a quite older other machine I do have Nero InCD that came with an external CD (not DVD) burner I bought... Hope this helps... Doesn't anyone at Ulead ever check out your own forum at http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 0503#10503... geez, I've given up on DMF-4 (too bad, because my trial version worked like a charm, turning mpeg2 into VIDEO_TS on DVDs). I've just faxed and will be mailing my signed copy of "Letter of Destruction" - Whereupon I added a note: "Shame on you for selling crap that doesn't work"!

Yes, I've tried the work-arounds offered in the forum; but it is a mystery to me why some times they work and sometimes they don't. I even had an instance (MF4 w/o work-around) where I requested two copies; the first one worked (as MF4 SOMETIMES does... but all to often not at all...). Gee, the first copy burn't fine, but for the second (doing nothing but load the next DVD blank) I got the ever present "Disc failure... busy w/other application, etc..." Sayonara Ulead!

Nonetheless, no sour grapes; I'll be glad to provide any further information from my experience that may be helpful to you guys - let me know. But, shame on you for releasing a $100 piece of software that plain doesn't work - read the rest of the threads on your own forum...

Saludos amigo,

Tom

Hey Rodrigt,

I had the same issues as you and went to Tech support, after a week they sent me a reply saying to uninstall then reinstall, this didn't fix the problem. I then rang customer service and they told me they know of the issue and are trying to fix it but as yet have no patch. I also told them of the issue I have once I do finally burn a disc that the image is clear but any fast action and it goes blurry. After messing around with the Bit rate and other advanced parts it still didn't help. Like you I didn't have a problem with MF3. Customer service were helpful and I too are completing a notice of destruction and getting my money back. I asked if MF3 was available to buy and they said no so i may have to find it elsewhere.

I tried finding instructions online on this "letter of destruction" and couldn't find any. Does anyone have a link, or must these instructions be retrieved over the phone through tech. support?

I can burn now - Remove packet writing

Post by qsprocket »

This is a thanks to Scottyblackspider -

I received a reply from Ulead tech support that basically gave me the software equivalent of a reboot. Thanks for nothing. They suggested removing the application - removing all my temp files and ulead directories and re-installing. Not the solution.

However - if you use the custom re-install and de-select the packet write add-on (third check-box down) - that does the trick. Now I can burn. No doubt the application is conflicting with my Sonic Record Now (I had already removed it's direct write ability - but I guess the damage was done.) Now I can burn directly from creating a project.

Ulead should take note. This is a solution to the user problem and probably gives them the software solution for an update patch.

Thanks again.

qsprocket,
PLEASE say more about how you accomplished " if you use the custom re-install and de-select the packet write add-on (third check-box down) - that does the trick." How do you invoke custom re-install? I gather you mean completely un-installing DMF4 and then going to custom install, rather than full/recommended - or what ever they call their options. As I'm more of a newbie, I would appreciate knowing if I am correctly understanding your guidance - THANK YOU!!!

I asked a similar question to maddrummer3301, who just wrote a very well informed post on the thread regarding "New MF4 Bug" - Guys, check it out.

Below is my latest reply from Ulead tech support...
> "Nero InCD may cause burning engine conflict with Ulead's own engine since they are both require exclusive drive access."
-- Hmm... and I thought MF4 invoked Nero. In maddrummer3301's most recent message, his comments also mentioned the "packet write" thing plus paying attention to the DVD blanc insertion sequence.

eswrite wrote"
> "I tried finding instructions online on this "letter of destruction" and couldn't find any. Does anyone have a link, or must these instructions be retrieved over the phone through tech. support?"
-- The later, talk to tech support and they will mail you the form, which should be returned signed via fax and also mailed in.

A while back I inquired about using Pinnacle software instead (less than half price). One reply said "beware"; does anybody else have comments on this?

Thanks guys!

Could you try uninstalling MovieFactory 4 and Nero InCD then restart the
computer? After that install MovieFactory 4 only and try burning a DVD.

Nero InCD may cause burning engine conflict with Ulead's own engine since they are both require exclusive drive access.

Thank you

Re: Removing “Ulead Data-Add in”… which as a newbie am assuming to be synonymous with the “data write” thing mentioned in above/recent messages, at
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=2492 I just noticed htchien’s 3/29/05 message stating: “If you wish to remove Ulead Data-Add in your system, select Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->Ulead Data-Add 2.0 and click on Remove.”

As I’m out of town & not at my home PC I have to wait before I can try this; has anyone tried this?

widescreen problems too

Post by sk »

Creating an iso image and then using the "Copy Disk" functon works, but only for 4:3 projects. 16:9 MPEGS and projects are burnt in 4:3 and wrecked.

I'll use MF4 for 4:3 burns and MF3 for 16:9 burns, since that older program DOES burn direct to DVD.

Hopefully soon a new product will be released that actually works.

ULEAD always seem to release unbtested, buggy software. I really hate that grinning chick on the box, laughing as we curse and reinstall a version 4 'all-new' program that just hasn't been tested!
sk

sort of fixed...

Post by sk »

I can now burn straight from the project without the Burner Is Busy stupidity...

Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs->Ulead Data-Add 2.0 and click on Remove.

I don't know what Data Add 2 was, but the DVD authoring now works. I used to have Nero In CD installed a while ago. Windows have a message about Burner Is Busy Code 39 problems on their support page, but the fix involves some registry tampering and that is all way too obscure for me. Besides, it may well have nothing to do with ULEADs program bug. Otherwise, in use MF4 is a lot better and quicker than MF3 and quite powerful.

However, ULEAD have still not got 16:9 right. My Widescreens MPEG2s still come out in cropped 4:3, but now with a 16:9 menu. It is the opposite in MF3!

So really, MF4 does not support widescreen.
sk

fixed at last!

Post by sk »

Addition/correction to my last...

16:9 projects DO burn in widescreen but unlike in MF3, you must go into your set top DVD player menu and instruct it to play in 16:9...it no longer does so automatically. The Widescreed DVD will play correctly on a software player on a PC. I found this tip on the Premiere Elements site! Not having been an issue in MF3, I never thought of it!

So - thanks forum, I've gone from a faulty and junky program to a very good one. Pity it needed all this research...most people wouldn't be able to find a solution very easily I suspect.
