program crashes when trying to "create a disk"

Post by Magicman »

This problem vertually renders this program a waste of time and money if I can not burn to disk.

EVERYTIME I go to create a disk the program crashes....This is absolutely unexceptable!!!
I have spent (wasted?) over 200 hours now since I can not burn anything.
I have even just made a project containing 1 HDV file just to make sure there wasn't any compatibility issues with the jpeg pictures I have included in other projects.
Please do not ask me to reinstall the program as I have done this too many times to remember.
I have been able to create a video file but I can not burn this either. I've been having to use a generic Roxio program to burn a simple disk and that is all. Please don't tell me that this Roxio program is better than your product!
I have been told it must be a corrupt file in my downloaded program but how can I tell? How do I get a clean version.....that works?
Am I missing something?

Am I missing something?
Yes! The version you are using, the clip properties, the project properties, and your workflow.

If you installed any burning softwares recently, please disable or uninstall it temporarily and make a test burn. Other burning softwares, especially ones with packet-writing capabilities that load into your system tray, can cause compatibility problems with the Ulead burning engine. Examples of such softwares are Nero InCD and Roxio EZCD Creator.

Hope this would help. =)

Please view:
DVD burning/playback issues

To check if the VideoStudio software is working correctly try burning the DVD to a hard drive folder rather than to a disc. If it completes this task then it indicates a probable problem with your DVD burner and/or discs.

Workflow is described here:
Suggested workflow by SJJ1805 for Video Creation

Your project settings are for High Definition and you have VideoStudio 10.
Have you installed the High Definition plug in from the Ulead website?

France....VideoStudio is the only burning program I have on this drive. As I stated, I can't get to the point where I can burn anything! I have captured the video/images from my handycam/digital cameras edited a nice movie together and even created a video file. I have then done both clicked to "create a disk" directly after editing and gone directly to "create a disk" and imported my created video file....on both occasions I get to the "choose a template" page. After choosing a template, I click the "next" button. At this point the program crashes and the computer reboots. The only time I ever got to the "burn page" was when I didn't have a burnable disk in the drive and it mentioned that fact... as soon as I put a disk in the drive .....reboot! These are the same disks I have (and still can) burn in this burner using other burn programs. (I have to boot into my other hard drive to do this as the hard drive I am using Video Studio on is clean of other burning programs.

SJJ...I can create a video file. On that topic I saw there was a referance to CD/DVD burning pack but after entering and checking "Who can update" the list mentions videostudio 7.0,8.0,9.0 users. I persume that even though it lists my burner...the fact that I'm using Video Studio 10plus means I do not need (can not benifit from) this patch...correct?
The last part of your comment is correct. The settings SHOULD be set for HD as I am using Sony's HDR-HC1 High Def handycam.....the reason I purchased this Video Studio 10 plus program. It stated it was specificly designed for this handycam.
I was not aware there was a plug required....this could be the problem!
Could you tell me where to get this plug? I thought everything was included when I downloaded the program.

SJJ,

It seems the "current capture plug-in" has always been set to
Ulead HDV Capture Plug-in.
I guess that is not the problem.

You mentioned something about the compatibility of the disks with this program I am using DVD +R disks. They seem to work just fine with the burner but could it be this program doe not like to use DVD +R disks?
Has there been an issue with others using DVD +R disks?

A I stated before, I can get past the "choose template" page by clicking the "Next" button AND arrive at the "burn page" (as I call it) only if I do NOT have a disk ready in the burner. Otherwise it crashes and the computer reboots.
IF I do not have a disk in the burner and I get to the "burn page" the program does have all the correct info about the situation. i.e.
It has a label listed
It recognizes my burner, names it and shows it in the proper drive.
Copies...listed as 1
Disk type...Empty as expected!
Create to disk...checked DVD-Video...chosen
Everything else....unchecked

Problem will then come if I put a disk in the burner....crash and re-boot!

Does any of this make sense?

I follow what you say.
Have you tried to burn to a hard drive folder, if so did it work.

Did you check the link I gave above concerning DVD burning/playback problems. If so have you checked your DVD burner manufacturers website for updated firmware.

Do you have any other brands of DVD disc that you can try. Some DVD burners are a bit fussy with what brands they work with.

Do you have any DVD discs that you purchased at another time.
Sometimes you can get a 'bad batch.'

SJJ,

When you say did I try to burn to a hard drive folder...are you asking if I created a video file of my project? If so, the answer is yes. I do have a copy of my project that is a single file....saved on my hard drive.
If this is not what you mean, could you explain?
To address your comment about my burner in the same breath, I don't think it has to do with the fussyness of the burner, since, when I boot my computer into my secondary drive, I can (only) use my Roxio program to burn my project. I just upload the video file I created using Video Studio (found on my other drive, the one I boot to when using Video Studio) plop it into the program and start burning...using the same disks I am trying to use while burning in Video Studio. Same burner, same disks.

Firmware for the burner is updated and current.

As I mentioned to FRance, I don't know if I have a burning problem because I can't get to the point where I can CHOOSE to burn. I can only get to the choosing of the template. As soon as I ckick the "next" button....it craches. UNLESS I don't put a disk in the burner, then I can get to the "burn" page but as soon as I put a disk into the burner....crash!

Am I correct that the CD/DVD burner update?
The list of "who can update" suggests Video Studio users of 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0. From the look of the upgrage date (some time in '05) I am presuming that version 10 and 10 +plus were not out yet. Am I wrong to assume the this up-date patch was intigrated into my version 10 +plus? Should I be downloading the update?

There should be no need to install the DVD burner update - as you correctly stated VideoStudio 11+ is more recent.

To burn the DVD to a hard drive you have to go to the burning page (You will have to leave your disc out of the drive in your situation)

Here is a sample screen from one of my tutorials:
Image

Look down the left and you will see an option to 'Create DVD folders'
Make sure that this one is ticked but the one that says 'Create to Disc' is unticked.

This will 'burn' the DVD to your hard drive.
You could then try burning that DVD to disc with your Roxio Program.

SJJ,

I am only running version 10 +plus....not 11+plus. Does your comment still apply?

I am in the process of burning to the hard drive as you suggested. If this is successful and I burn it to a disk using my roxio program. How will it differ from the disk I created using the video file (I created with Video Studio) and the Roxio program?
As I mentioned I can burn to disk using the Roxio program but I paid a lot of money (I bought all the add on programs...bundled..with this program) for this program and it seems a little ironic that it seems I paid good money for a program that doesn't work/needs the compitition's program to work at all!!??!!.

I'm still left with a program that won't allow me to get to the burn page with a disk in the burner. Make the progran kind of useless.

Any idea how to get a refund or better yet another copy that may not be corrupt? This one seems to have an unfixable bug!
It's funny that I just got an invitation and a coupon (via email) to up grade to the latest version.
LOL I would have prefered a coupon to just download a version that worked.

The above screen shot was in fact taken with VideoStudio 10+
In fact you have reminded me to check to see if I need to update that part of the forum tutorial.

It is my normal practice to burn to a hard drive folder. I am then able to give the completed DVD a final once over using a computer based DVD player such as:
PowerDVD
Nero Showtime
WinDVD

I then use a third party DVD burning program to burn the completed DVD to Disc. You will find that this is common practice amongst many of the Senior Forum members.

Ok,
One mre question about burning to hard drive.
I noticed the default location for the dvd file is ....../my documents/UleadVideoStudio/10.0/
I named the label harddrivetest.
After the operation is complete I went to look at this file....I can not find it in the location it listed?!?

Any idea where these files go?
I tried it again just to make sure I was correct with the location and it popped up and said a dvd directory already exists...overwrite? I said yes, the operation completed and yet I do not see this file anywhere. I ever did a search and it does not show!?

I though this was a simple program
