Video Capture Error

Post by The Ship »

I have Ulead VideoStudio 11 and I am a first time user. I loaded the program on an older PC that has XP operating system. When I tried to capture from a DV camera I got the error: "Cannot start the capture graph" or something similar to this. Assuming that it must be the older PC I tried using a brand new HP Pavilion laptop, but I am getting the same error. I am using a fire wire to connect to the DV camera. If anyone can assist in this matter it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You usually get this if the camera is not connected or switched on. it should work on your older PC also. Check the cable as well.

I was using a cable on the PC that I have never had a problem with. However, when I switched computers to try on the brand new laptop I had to purchase a new fire wire that would connect. So the cable on the second computer is brand new and the one on the PC has always worked before. What other problems could it be?

Is your camera being recognized by the computers? You should get an audible tone and may get a pop-up message asking if you want to capture using VS11, and if you have some other programs installed capable of capturing video, list them as well. It should also show up as an external drive.

Try turning off your camcorder, then launch VS. Once it is loaded, then turn on your camcorder, go to the Capture step, and see if it will allow you to capture.

And can you clarify please: are you trying to capture DV format video from the cassette in a mini DV video camera, or are you using the mini DV camera as a passthrough device so that you can capture analogue video in DV format?

If the latter, then a genuine bug has been discovered whereby VS11, unlike previous versions, will no longer allow passthrough capture.

I have found, though, that the small freeware program WinDV will still capture in these circumstances, including on a Vista computer (also a HP Pavilion laptop).

1. No, I do not receive any recognition that the DV camara is attached.

2. I am trying to capture from the mini DV tape that was already recorded, not using as a pass through.

Also, I have tried various ways of loading. Such as turning the camera on then starting VS and starting VS then plugging in and turning the camera on. Nothing seems to cause a recognition

Well that's an absolutely stock standard, middle of the road camera so there is no obvious reason why it should not work.

Can you Google for the WinDV program I mentioned and install it. (It is tiny -- less than 1 MB, so that won't take long.) Testing it with you camera will indicate -- if it works -- that your current problem lies with VS 11. If it does not work with WinDV, then the problem is starting to look more likely to be you camera's (or computer's) firewire connection.

(You could also test it with Windows Movie Maker if you don't want to download WinDV.)

I downloaded the program and it did not recognize it either. I also tried through windows media player and it did not recognize it. If I understand correctly you are saying it is more than likely a problem with my video camera, correct?

Well, if other programs also won't recognise it, that suggests a hardware problem, rather than a software one.

Since it has also not worked on another computer, and you have two firewire cables, then that strongly suggests it might be the camera's firewire connection.

The only other thing I can think of would be to borrow a friend's camera which is also a mini DV one, to see if that works on either of your computers.
