4:3 not 16:9 Please Help

Post by JSKY »

Hi.

I`m first time on this forum. I downloaded today trial version of Ulead 11 Plus. I opened editor with indicated 16:9, this is how I record on my Panasonic Dv cam. Unfortunately, after CAPTURE from DV it shows 4:3 instead of 16:9. Why is that, what wrong I do. I had before 10plus and it was exactly the same, that`s why I decided not to purchase it. At the moment I use Windows Movie Maker which is really easy and enough to use, but I want something more, first of all after seeing tutorials. I just cannot believe all these movies there are made by UV. It`s great.
I will very appreciate any help. Thank You :D

Are you sure it displays your captured video as 4:3? The preview window remains in (aspect ratio) 4:3 but your video should be in 16:9 displayed with a black band at top and bottom (or does your captured video fill the preview window? I presume that you had your camera set to 16:9 when you were 'filming'.

jparnold Thank You for reply.

Yes, I`m sure it is 4:3 because I checked in Properties. Besides, my video displays black around with picture in the middle. I filmed everything 16:9 I had first time this problem with Windows Video Maker, but it was easy to change in tools and how I want to put on DVD, but in UV once is captured wrong cannot change it. It seems like I have to capture again. Any idea? :D

Hi JSKY

Did you capture to DV format via firewire cable?
This captures/transfers the data to VS without recoding.
If you captured to any other format then you have to set the capture properties and the aspect ratio.

Just an Idea:-
Problems can occur:- If the DV-Mini tape has been used previously for 4:3 recording then recorded over at 16:9. The first few frames may be 4:3, this gives false info to VS, which may captures the whole tape using 4:3.

Assuming you captured to DV, make sure the preview screen shows widescreen and not 4:3. as stated by John above.

By setting File-Preferences-Capture Tab-Set ¡¥Press OK to Capture¡¦

This pre-roles your tape allowing you to OK for capture.
Press Ok only when the preview screen shows 16:9 widescreen.

trevor andrew Thank You for your reply.

Yes, I did capture with firewire

I did not set anything, just indicated 16:9 before editor has been opened.
If the DV-Mini tape has been used previously for 4:3 recording then recorded over at 16:9
I have never recorded 4:3, always 16:9
As I mentioned before, Windows Movie Maker (WMM) handle this very well. It imported 4:3 but in properties I had changed to 16:9 and it immediately switched to 16:9. Before burning I change to PAL or NTSC and it works, but this is WMM not VS.

By setting File-Preferences-Capture Tab-Set ¡¥Press OK to Capture¡¦
"Press OK for Capture" wasn`t checked, so I have changed
his pre-roles your tape allowing you to OK for capture.
Press Ok only when the preview screen shows 16:9 widescreen.
I don`t get it a little bit (sorry I`m not English native speaker)
Should I keep "Press OK to Capture¡¦" checked or it depends on something?

When I look at PROPERTIES on the screen it shows 16:9 MPEG, but it doesn`t shows this way. Is it possible to attach picture here, that I can show?
Thank You again for any help

Please right click a video clip in the timeline and select properties, what does the Attributes indicate?

When you capture to DV format your capture creates a Dv-Avi file. You should not see 16:9 Mpeg but Avi.
Using Dv-Avi¡KThere are no capture properties to set, what you have in the camera is what you get on VS. From the ¡¥options¡¦ cogwheel select Dv-Type 1

Capture a few minutes as a short test using DV¡K.
Please select DV as your capture format. The file size created (dv-Avi) will be 13 Gb per hour.
Does the capture look ok?????

If you have captured to Mpeg, Dvd etc then you have to set the capture properties.
Press the ¡¥options¡¦ cogwheel, select ¡¥Video and Audio Capture Properties Settings¡¦
Select ¡¥Advanced. Here you can change the Aspect Ratio to 16:9

Please read my guide ¡¥16:9 widescreen¡¦
This shows how widescreen should be viewed using VS.
and My Quick Guide Dv-Avi

Hope this Helps

Hi
A bit more info

I have just tried Windows Movie Maker and provided I selected my Panasonic as the source and Digital Device format (Dv-Avi) as the video settings-- then capture to 16:9 is ok.

If these were the settings you used then it would display ok.

Using Video Studio Select DV as the capture format.

Hi Andrew,

Thank You again for your clear explanation. Your website is also very, very helpful. I put into my favorite :)
Please right click a video clip in the timeline and select properties, what does the Attributes indicate?
It was .mpeg

I did a test today according to your advice and...it worked :D Thank You.
I realized that I had Capture as "DVD", but after reading your post I have changed to as "DV" and it shows 16:9 in preview window as well as after I stopped capture. I clicked PROPERTIES again and there was file format "Microsoft AVI", video compression "DV Video encoder type 1" etc.

I have still a lot to learn. For instance, cutting is more difficult than in WMM. Next problem which occurs is preview quality: it shows kind of "stop clip" I would say., but it doesn`t stop. Is like 1/1000000 slow motion. Sorry, no idea how to explain it. I don`t know whether is my PC (VISTA Duo 2 Core, RAM2GB, HDD300 ) or bit rate. I did not do RENDERING yet, just was curious about quality.
I will read again your site. It sounds very valuable for newbie in UV as myself. According what you wrote there it is good to set own Movie Manager. Another good idea is .iso file. I would never thought about it

Thank You again. I`m sure I will be back to this forum with more problems. One I found is that sometimes my Windows Vista shows Video Studio Not responding and I have to close program. I had twice this.

problem again?

I would like to add that I clicked on "Project Preview" and...it showed only small screen in the middle, not full screen (on PC.) It was like I mentioned before black around the movie. Another problem which had already occurred a few times is when I tried to make DVD UV stopped responding again. Message on my PC popped up "ULEAD VIDEO DO NOT RESPOND. WINDOWS TRY TO FIND SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM" I had to close everything. Why it happens?

Hi JSKY

Glad to hear you are having success in capturing 16:9

If you are seeing a black border then you may be using a 4:3 video in a 16:9 project.
Please check the clip properties by:- right click and select properties.
The effect you see would occur if you captured 16:9 to 4:3 and viewed in a 16:9 frame.
Otherwise using the ¡¥Overlay track¡¦ would give a similar view.

I cannot comment on your PC problem as I do not have Vista.
It may be worthwhile starting a new post for this particular problem.
Others in the know, I am sure will respond.
