photo stitching

I'm a newbie to this... But what I'm looking for is software that I can stitch 2 photos into 1. Not sure if this is the right place to post but thought I could maybe accomplish this with cool3D software. I also have PhotoImpact and Photo Explorer. Could someone please point me in the right direction.

Photoimpact;Create a new blank twice the width of your photos then drag both photos onto tour blank.Then resize.

Have just rebuilt my computer and have managed to lose several programmes - but - before that, I entered into my search engine 'free stitching panorama software' and I downloaded several programmes that stitched, not just two shots, but many to make amazing panoramic pictures.
